Some people are claiming dA is starting to try and turn itself in Facebook. However I don't think the admin changes to dA is doing nearly as much damage as certain deviants themselves. This website use to be about art, not displaying stolen pictures.

Self-Motivating Through Creative Blocks

=jcroxas:iconjcroxas: reports, August 24
an article by Cameron Chapman

Please find some time to read this too! :aww:

As designers, we need to be creative in order to be successful at our jobs.

Coming up with ideas and creative solutions to problems is what we do on a daily basis. But that doesn’t mean it’s always easy to do so.

Sometimes we get blocked creatively, and it seems like no matter how hard we try, we just can’t come up with a creative solution to anything.

The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do that can help you overcome a block in your creativity. First you’ll need to understand why you’re blocked, and then try some simple techniques to get over that blockage.

In this article, we’ll also cover a few ideas for finding motivation when your lack of desire to work is the root of your creativity problems.

What's with 'Studying from Life'!?

*painted-bees:iconpainted-bees: reports, August 24
Many of us artists on DeviantART strive to develop our own 'cartooning' style--whether it be influenced by eastern styles like 'anime' and 'manga', or western styles like DC and Marvel, or something in between!

But why are we always told to 'study from life' when we don't want to have a 'realistic' style? What are we expected gain from it?

Well this article tries to explain whether or not this age old, tired and frequently repeated piece of advice actually has any merit--and how to go about it.

God and Creativity part 2

~Ragwitch:iconRagwitch: reports, August 31
By what criteria should we, as children of God, judge what art is acceptable to view and create? The answer may surprise you, for Jesus said, “What goes into a man’s mouth does not make him ‘unclean,’ but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him ‘unclean’” Matthew 15:11. Likewise, it is not what we see with our eyes that makes us unclean, it’s what those things inspire us to think and do.

In this piece I am contributing to the discussion, taking into accounts views articulated elsewhere. This piece is not written on behalf on any group but represents solely my own opinions. I hope, through it, to reach more deviants and gain a clearer understanding about the future of groups, in view of the effort and input I have personally given to several of them.

When did we start hating everything?

`Rahll:iconRahll: reports, December 23, 2009
Why is everyone overly critical, cynical experts on everything these days?

What do I mean by this? Let me elaborate.

I find that in this day and age, everyone and their mother has an opinion on just about everything. This wouldn't bother me if many people weren't either too ignorant to form an actual opinion, or too self absorbed to be objective. In other words, how can you have an opinion on something you know nothing about, and how can you have an opinion if you're too narrow-minded to see something from any other perspective.

Although this applies to a lot of different things, the cases that bother me the most personally have to do with entertainment. Entertainment is basically my life, I love good stories told in all sorts of formats from books to movies to comics and anything in between. I love to create things for my own personal entertainment, and to entertain others.

So, it really bothers me when people get a thorn up their ass about something they know nothing about before giving it a chance. Case in point: Avatar.

Judgement Day

The general public reception of this film has been overwhelmingly positive, and the movie has already broken records. But let's backtrack to the months before the movie's release.

Being a nerd in many senses of the word, I've been keeping track of the film and the buzz around it, and I remember months back when the first trailers aired, and all people could do was trash James Cameron, trash his designs, trash his story, before a single one of them had seen the film or really knew much of anything about it.

This is James Cameron we're talking about, and whether you like the man or not, he's directed some of the best Hollywood films there are, both from a box office standpoint and public opinion standpoint. Terminator, Terminator 2, Aliens, The Abyss, True Lies, Titanic, and now Avatar, are in my opinion solid films and good story telling.

But that's beside the point. The point is, why are people practically reviewing a film when all that's been released is a few promo photos, a very rough synopsis, and a teaser trailer? And it happens ALL the time.

So of course, I'm not talking just about Avatar when it comes to movies and people trashing them, it just happens to be the most recent case. Like I said, it happens all the time. People like to think they're experts on film and will judge and critique things without knowing jack about them.

I can't tell you how many people I've seen bashing movies on forums, who haven't seen a particular film and have no intention of seeing it, even when previous naysayers step out of the theatre admitting they were wrong. In addition to that, some people made up their minds months before a movie comes out, and won't actually "enjoy" it even if they do find themselves liking it if they end up watching it. If you don't think a film looks interesting and don't want to see it, leave it at that.

Difficulty in Being Entertained

My point here is that why are people so critical and cynical of entertainment these days? Whatever happened to being able to just sit back and enjoy something for what it is? Why does everything need to be critiqued down to the smallest, most insignificant detail?

I'm not saying that people aren't allowed to dislike things or have a different opinion from the general public or myself, but when did everyone become experts on film, games, or any one of the many other forms of entertainment out there?

When did it suddenly become cool to hate on everything? When did we become so ridiculously pessimistic and cynical about everything? Why can't we just like things for what they are anymore without complaining about what they aren't?

That's not to say we can't have opinions, but people are hardly reasonable or objective these days, which makes so many of them impossible to please. If you hate everything out there so much that you have to go out of your way to tear it apart and insult the creators, then either actively do something about it, or shut up.

Reality Check

Let's just take a step back and remember what entertainment is all about... being entertained! If something doesn't do it for you, that's fine, but you have to give it a chance before you can have a legitimate opinion worth listening to. And if you give it a chance, and still dislike it, at least try to be objective before you dissect it piece by piece. Not liking "stupid giant blue cat people" isn't a good enough reason.

I'm personally tired of it, and I'm sure many of you can agree with me. So why don't we all just jump down off of our high horses for a bit, and be happy and optimistic for a change. Let's take the bitterness out of entertainment and enjoy ourselves instead always counting on being disappointed. No one benefits from this attitude, especially not the entertainment industry.

So let's stop being so narrow-minded and one dimensional. You don't need to like what everyone else likes, but if you're going to dislike something, at least have a reasonable leg to stand on. And remember, it's a piece of entertainment. It's not like someone stepped through your front door and fornicated your mother in front of you, stop taking it personally and relax. Everyone will be a lot happier.

On a side note, I don't want anyone to take this personally. It's just my take on an increasingly troubling problem I'm seeing in the entertainment world. This isn't a loaded shotgun aimed at anyone in particular, it's more of a broad statement with some current examples.

So just in case anyone feels like disputing my stance, please make it a respectful discussion and not an argument. Remember, this is an editorial, i.e. my opinion with reasons behind it.

"it's a rip-off of this, and this and this too. and those were rip-offs of these" etc. and so forth. and of course THOSE aren't based off of this or that, or evolutions of >this< tale that's been told for centuries.

==sigh==

i agree. if you are going to deconstruct it, do it for reasons related to storytelling, or technical, or actor chemistry. but don't just hate on it on the basis of a few clips and comments, or that it is influenced by what came before.

Normally I don't read this stuff, but this one caught my eye. I know exactly how you feel, and it hits me on a personal level. I recently came out with a rough raft for the novel I'm writing, and it received some, shall we say less than desirable reviews from my friend doing the editing. He made some good points that I agree with, but I can only imagine how many more people out there will actually treat the finished story with all of the details worked out, with the same scorn and hatred, (yes, hatred). We should all take a lesson from your article. Good work.

Thing is, I studied film studies for about 2 years and this film has a type: Blockbuster

Blockbusters are not made to be commentary on society, intelligent, thought-provoking or have some kind of deep message on a particular theme. They are made with 3 aims:

1. Entertainment value - These films rely on pure, leave-your-brain-at-the-door, good old fashioned cinema fun.
2. Money - Everyone knows blockbusters have a money backing behind them, all do. Any summer/winter blockbuster has its main objectives and finical gain from popcorn munching is a given
3. Pure fun - They are not there to do anything except entertain.

The problem is, people THINK they know how to critique and analyze a movie when really, they don't. They have no grounding or teaching in that field. Avatar is SCI-FI a.k.a. Science fiction which is NOT REAL. It's called "Suspension of Disbelief" which you need to do to fully immerse yourself in a film like Avatar.

Oh yeah, we praise Titanic -which is based on fact yet is so historically inaccurate, it makes me wanna smack Cameron- and don't get me wrong, I adore Cameron's work but Titanic was a disaster -pun so not intended- as THAT had no substance. Dramatisation or not, that's a major disaster in history, you gotta get your facts right (It always irked me that he got into first class! It doesn't work like that)

People don't know how to have fun anymore, you gotta pick pick pick. It's popular to bash Avatar. You're apparently intellectually backwards if you like the film according to residential cinema-snobs.

Save your hate for things that deserve the hate, I say.
Avatar is a typical Cameron film, what do you expect? Lawrence of Arabia or something?

If I wanted a political or societal commentary, I'd watch Italian Neo-realism again.

:iconskarvalidus:
I like how down-to-earth and sensible this is. Very valid standpoint, and I tend to agree with you here. People are very overcritical of entertainment in general, and it annoys me. Personally, even if the plot is bad, special effects laughable, characters underdeveloped, etc., I still like to just sit down and be absorbed in a movie (this goes for all types of entertainment, I'm quite an avid reader). So, anyway, nicely written little rant.

:iconlovelustetc:
I love this article in so so many ways.

Blogging is great in that it allows people to share aspects of their lives and connect with other people. But it also allows anyone and everyone to become a critic. And sorry, but just because can type and have internet access does not make you a literary, cinema, or television critic.

I actually kind of miss the old blogger reviews where someone might say, "Oh I hated Team America because puppets suck." Because at least you can sit and go "okay, that's an honest opinion" and treat it with a grain of salt. But nowadays people feel the need to post these longer (tl;dr) in-depth reviews, dissecting movies almost frame by frame. And because of that, they are getting followers and attention as if their opinion really matters.
