`SparrowSong on writing, critique and her passions

^lovetodeviate:iconlovetodeviate: reports, September 28
An interview with writer, critic (critiquer?), lit senior, `SparrowSong. Here are some tidbits:

“I like that my passions change. If nothing else, it gives me more to write about.”

“Everyone has heard the expression, ‘Give a man a fish, he eats for a day; teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.’ If you don’t learn to critique, you will always be dependent on others to help you instead of being able to do it by yourself.”

“Art changes how we view the surface of the world to reveal truth or beauty—or both—underneath.”

Giller literary Awards

~johnedgar:iconjohnedgar: reports, November 5, 2003
M.G. Vassanji has taken Canada most prestigious prize for the second time. His book, The In-Between World of Vikram Lall was proclaimed the year's best English-language novel by the Giller jury in the Giller literary awards. His prize was a grand $25,000. The event was hosted by .This hour has 22 minuets. co start Mary Walsh who also happens to be the host of Canada Televison(CTV) series .open book..

Vassanji won the Giller prize back in 1994 with his world acclaimed novel .The Book of Secrets.. Which was the first year the awards where held started by Jack Rabinovitch to honour his late wife the literary journalist Doris Giller, who was Canadas best loved and most renowned journalist.

The story he won the prize for is set in the 1950s during the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya. It tells the story of an 8 year old Vikram Lall boy who is trying to become an Indian among British and African friends. The book is what can only be described as sensational and I personally would commend it to anyone who enjoys a well thought out, interesting book.

The other writers who made the short list were Margaret Atwood, nominated for .Oryx and Crake., John Bemrose for .The Island Walkers., John Gould for .Kilter: 55 Fictions., and Ann-Marie MacDonald for .The Way the Crow Flies..

You can find more information on the Giller Prize here

Sorry about all the screwed up quotation marks being periods, I posted this with lynx and it seems to like to do that, a lot.

I saw an exclusive emphasizing this on television the other day. It was a behind the scenes with the judges of this contest.

I might be all for this winner and the others if two of the judges hadn't admitted not reading all of the entries and then going on to add that one of the other judges was going by title alone and merely skimming the books s/he had chosen.

I'm not saying the winner's didn't deserve to win, but the contest was unfair to all of those who entered.

They broke the golden rule, never judge a book by it's cover and that's exactly what they had openly admitted to doing and even elaborated on their cheat sheet methods.

I for one, am disgusted.

Well, actually I kinda expected him to win mainly because he won the first one, and then it would be political if he won the 10th anniversary. However, it is an amazing book all the same.
