Wallpaper Gallery: Summary of Expectations

Definition of a Wallpaper
The
Wallpaper Gallery is basically a collection of images defined by their categories where one could browse them and select images to use on their personal computers as desktop wallpaper, or to build a desktop theme. Wallpapers must conform to a set of specific sizes, which are known as screen resolutions. A list of these possible resolutions is listed below; under Wallpaper Dimensions.

Standard Wallpaper Dimensions
Please ensure that your wallpaper is of correct dimensions. The list below are standard sizes we expect most wallpapers to portray:
640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x960, 1280x1024, 1600x1200, 2048x1536
IF you are submitting to the
Dual-Display section, then your dual-display wallpaper must conform to any of the sizes listed below:
1280x480, 1600x600, 2048x768, 2304x864, 2560x960, 2560x1024, 3200x1200, 4096x1536
If your wallpaper is intended for HDTV or widescreen users on both PCs and Macs alike, then you will have to submit to the section entitled
HDTV/Widescreen.
Both minor and major discrepancies in the deviations dimensions will result in a Section Violation and your deviation deleted on the spot without notice. Please check your entire deviations gallery to make sure that your wallpaper submissions (if you have any) conform to the proper dimensions mentioned above.

Section: 3-Dimensional
This section is entirely devoted to wallpapers of the
3D nature, therefore wallpapers submitted here must contain 3D of some sort that clearly depicts all three X,Y,Z-axis used.
All Terragen-related and renders portraying an environment of some sort belong under
Scenery. All abstract-related 3D must belong in
Abstract.
Another issue concerning the 3D section is the 3D that's being put in there. Bare-renders (finished, unfinished, or tests) that only depict the rendered model in a plain setting and/or on a plain background belongs under
IndyArt>3-Dimensional OR Designs>3-Dimensional.

Explanations of the Sections
The following are explanations of the sections in the
Wallpaper Gallery.
3 Dimensional - see the above section in this news article for an explanation on the expectations of submissions to this section.
Abstract - wallpapers in this section are consistent in that their depictions do not represent anything in particular of any pre-defined shape, form, or object. Abstract wallpapers generally depict non-geometric, but organic forms usually resembling the state of emotions or of free-thought expressions.
Anime - wallpapers in this section are consistent in their depictions of anime-style art ranging from all types (i.e. manga, anthro, etc.). You must *NOT* use screenshots, sprites, material(s) found on anime & related websites, or from publications, etc. Everything must be original works by you and/or have obtained the necessary permissions from the owners to be used in your derivative and transformative works. Unless otherwise specified to be allowed for public use in the original website's "Terms of Use" (or the like) for the images you've used in your wallpaper deviation, you must not submit your game wallpaper if it contains material that does not belong to you. *** An update on this issue can be found in THIS ARTICLE.
Automotive - wallpapers in this category are expected to depict anything of automotive nature. For example: photos of cars, trucks, sports cars, models of cars, sketches of cars, etc. would be placed in this category. Automotive wallpapers are expected to be suitable for the use of a computer desktop where one can easily find appropriate places to put their icons.
Dark - wallpapers contained here are consistent with the use of dark colors and dark grungy themes. Dark could also describe the atmosphere and/or emotions depicted, but be sure that the colors are of dark values.
Dual-Display - this section is dedicated to wallpapers designed to be used on dual-monitor setups. Wallpapers, regardless of any subject, that are twice the width of any standard wallpaper dimension listed in this article above, are to be placed in this section.
Fantasy - this section is dedicated to wallpapers depicting an interest in the fantasy culture or of a particular subject in fantasy. For example: fairytales, surreal settings, fictional scenery and settings, etc. would best be appropriate in this section.
Females - wallpapers submitted to this section are consistent with the display of a female model, 3D female-like model, painting, drawing, etc. in some natural or pre-defined pose and/or posture in any kind of setting. Submission etiquette towards nudity still applies to this section. Remember, you must submit artwork that is yours originally, and the wallpaper must not utilize any images of females found via another website, a publication, etc.
Freehand - this section is dedicated to wallpapers designed freehandedly. Wallpapers contained here are "drawn" out using tools that either are, or mimic, freehand-drawing tools such as pencils, paintbrush, airbrush, ink, etc.
Games - this section is dedicated to wallpapers that depict a particular interest in games. The most common depiction of game-related material would be from console and PC games. Others may include board games or traditional games. You must *NOT* use screenshots, sprites, material(s) found on gaming websites, or from publications, etc.
HDTV/Widescreen - this section is dedicated to wallpapers that were specifically made to be used on HDTV and Widescreen computer monitors. Regardless of the subject the wallpaper depicts best, if it's an irregular size and was meant to be used on HDTV and/or Widescreens, this is the section to put it in.
Light - this section is dedicated to wallpapers that are of opposite nature to the dark category. Wallpapers submitted here are expected to depict something light and bright, and somewhat close to minimal. Much like dark, light wallpapers are consistent with the use of light colors such as white and other light values of other colors.
Macs/Apple - this section is dedicated to wallpapers which are best suitable for use on the Mac/Apple computers. Macs/Apple wallpapers generally do not conform to the standard wallpaper dimensions, which means this would be the correct section to put them in.
Males - wallpapers submitted to this section are consistent with the display of a male model, 3D male-like model, painting, drawing, etc. in some natural or pre-defined pose and/or posture in any kind of setting. Submission etiquette towards nudity still applies to this section. Remember, you must submit artwork that is yours originally, and the wallpaper must not utilize any images of males found via another website, a publication, etc.
Medieval - this section is dedicated to wallpapers depicting an interest in the medieval culture or of a particular subject in a medieval nature. Wallpapers depicting fictitious medieval characters, themes, plots, items, settings, and etc. are to be placed in this section.
Minimalistic - this section is dedicated to wallpapers of the simplistic nature and do not make use of a great amount of space. Designs are kept relatively simple, subtle, and depict a lot of negative space.
Movies - wallpapers in this category depict an interest in a particular movie or the movie theme(s) in general. You *CANNOT" submit wallpapers containing material that does not originally belong to you. You *CANNOT* submit wallpapers utilizing screenshots from a movie, utilizing materials found in publications, or using images off movie websites for the purpose of using it in your deviation. If it contains any of the such, it must not be submitted here.
Photo Manipulated - this section is dedicated to wallpapers which were originally photographs, but manipulated in such a fashion so that it is suitable to be used as a desktop wallpaper. You cannot submit photo-manipulated wallpapers containing photography belonging to someone else. Obtain permissions first!
Political - this section is dedicated to wallpapers depicting an interest in a particular political issue. It consists of, but not limited to, cartoon-style renditions, personal photographic manipulations, etc. This section is not to be used to put political deviations which contain copyrighted images found off news websites or the like. Check for permissions before using any content and images which you intend to use for your derivative and transformative works that you plan on submitting to deviantART.
Psychedelic - wallpapers in this section are consistent with the use of abstract distortions and infinite patterns using fluorescent and bright mixtures of colors arranged in an organized, or disorganized fashion.
Scenery - this section is dedicated to wallpapers depicting a view or views of natural features, especially that of open country and/or locations that may otherwise be real. Photographs, 3-dimensional renders, paintings, sketches, etc. depicting scenery should be placed in this section.
Science Fiction - this section is dedicated to wallpapers depicting an interest in the science fiction culture or of a particular subject in science fiction. For example: spacescapes, planetscapes, aliens, organic forms, supernatural subjects, and etc. would best be suited here.
Technical - this section is dedicated to wallpapers depicting an interest in technical designs, which consist of linear geometric shapes, organic designs, typographic elements, and images depicting a strong skill in design mechanics.
Tiles - this section is dedicated to wallpapers oriented in a way so that if the image were to be adjacent to the same image, it would seamlessly repeat without bound. Take a look at the sample image below for a better idea of what will tile.

Unfinished - this section is dedicated to wallpapers that are not yet complete and require further critiquing and suggestions. An unfinished wallpaper is expected to be deleted after some period of time once the new completed wallpaper is ready for upload. Dimension guidelines are still enforced in this section.

Etiquette Policy
This is a reminder that all wallpapers, regardless of subject and section, are still binding to the etiquette policies which can be found here:
Etiquette Policies.

What Makes It A Wallpaper?
Just because your art piece happens to be the same size as a wallpaper does not mean you should submit it to the Wallpaper category. You must first consider if it is suitable to be used as a wallpaper on someone's desktop PC. Consider whether or not someone will actually find practical use in the wallpaper you are about to, or will submit. Remember there needs to be ample, and usable space for icons to blend in properly with the background. Please avoid submitting and/or creating wallpapers with too much clutter, because it will render the wallpaper useless for any placement of icons or for themes. If it wasn't meant to be a wallpaper to begin with, then please do not submit to it that category. Direct all non-wallpaper related material to
IndyArt instead. Also, avoid submitting sketches or doodles on notebook paper, for it will be a very unpopular pick amongst the wallpaper submissions.

Mass Section Violation Issuings
Wallpaper Gallery Directors will personally be sorting through every single deviation for signs of section violations most particularly deviations of incorrect size. We will be working backwards starting with August 7, 2000, however we've already gotten a jump start and deleted all size violations up through mid-August 2001.
We should be starting with Policy Violations shortly.

i mean, people who sign up and become deviants in the future wont be reading this news article will they?
And when we get people submitting things into the wrong category or gallery (i'm so sick of finding indyart/photography in the texture gallery) it'd be nice to point them to the apropriate gallery submission guide so they can learn from their mistakes.
great work btw. i don't think i've ever seen such a nicely formatted article in the news around here, and it's very thorough
