Be Someone's Critical Friend!

^GeneratingHype:iconGeneratingHype: reports, May 2

This month, with focused, research-based activities and friendly advice, we're going to try to teach you how to take on both these roles--and show you how acquiring these skills can help make you a better reader and writer in the future.

New Poets

`wernstrum:iconwernstrum: reports, Mar 10, 2004
New poets on deviantart

There are some issues that new members, and would-be members to the poetry community (and deviantART in general), encounter in their interactions on this site.

Writer’s seem to find that they
:pointr: don’t receive enough feedback on their submissions
:pointr: are receiving feedback that they don’t appreciate, perhaps because they consider it too critical or because the provider of the feedback isn’t giving it properly
:pointr: are finding it hard to find good literature
:pointr: have difficulties finding ways to learn to become better writers, and to become more involved with the community

In the spirit of friendship I would firstly like to put to you that many other writers have been in this situation, and offer you some ways that you can remedy the above problems:

1. Comment and network to receive feedback. You can do this by
:lightbulb: simply browsing the poems available - [link]

:lightbulb: joining one of the sub-communities that focus on networking such as ~daac, ~writers-adoption, ~workgroups, and ~WeCritique

2.
:lightbulb: ~WeCritique offers critiquing guidelines [link] and suggests acceptable behavior when commenting. When commenting, the approach of “do to others as you would like done to you” is a must and is ingrained in this guide.

3.
:lightbulb: ~suture focuses on showcasing good literature. Their latest issue (at time of writing) - [link] - is recommended as a starting point.

:lightbulb: To familiarize yourselves with a wide range of relatively established poets on deviantaART, there is a directory here - [link]

:lightbulb: The Daily Deviations are an indicator of relatively good poetry - [link]

4.
:lightbulb: There is a writers’ forum at [link] where members meet to raise and discuss ideas and issues.

:lightbulb: There exist groups dedicated to poetry which offer workshops, advice and contests. These include:
~poetic-forms, ~poetrycafe, ~livingpoetsociety

These are some of the tools you can use to enhance your deviantART experience. All the best!

I wonder how many new deviants/poets are going to read (and appreciate) this?

But it's well said, and I might start linking it around in my critiques.
