I'd love to go see a show like that though, or even make a piece of my own involving everyday ordinary objects! Sounds good!

Engineering design? As opposed to artistic design? Paperclips are hardly an artistic expression of the creator - they are an example of the application of scientific principles in the design of an object that solves a problem.
A bent paperclip, however... Well well well...

we make our world significant by the courage of our questions and by the depth of our answers - sagan
I think we have, however, segregated the notion of "art" and "design" into two different categories. The exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art is highlighting that the world of design is a link to the imagination as paint on canvas is. To say that design and the invention of everyday objects is the same as or equivalent to 2-dimentional painting is a difficult task...which is why the exhibit is in the Museum of MODERN art. Industrial, Graphic and Architectural designers are unifying their abstractions with everyday life. They are creating art that is intimately involved with everyday life rather than a scene or idea that viewers look at. I do not mean to downplay one or the other, merely to suggest the idea that they are closer to each other than first meets the eye.
