DENYING THE POVERTY DRAFT-THE SOLDIER AS A SYMBOL

=whitetrashpalace:iconwhitetrashpalace: reports, 8h 20m ago
The Poverty Draft, Politics, Symbols, and the inconvenience of being human.

Even in times of war, the Soldier as an individual is of no consequence. The Soldier is a symbol, a simple pawn in a culture war. The Soldier is either a villain, or a Hero. The Soldier always serves for the honor of his country, not his paycheck. The Soldier is faithful, as there are 'no atheists in the trenches'. The Soldier is Combat Arms. The Soldier is male, he married a young white girl, and he has a baby on the way, whom he has never met.

The Soldier is a romantic ideal.

Humble Masterpieces

`insaneone:iconinsaneone: reports, April 13, 2004
According to The New York Museum of Modern Art.They have used these and other items of everyday life to create a 120 piece exhibit.

Humble Masterpieces continues at the Museum of Modern Art through Sept. 27. 2004.

An exerpt follows:

"Everyday objects, like the paper clips on your desk or the zipper keeping your pants up, can be examples of brilliant design, say the organizers of a new exhibit at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

By placing these objects among more traditional "masterpieces," curator Paola Antonelli wanted to show "how amazing and beautiful everyday objects are."

I think they are! For sure, that's a very interesting, but not too original idea.

I'd love to go see a show like that though, or even make a piece of my own involving everyday ordinary objects! Sounds good!

And WHAT THE HELL is it with people and the FIRST COMMENT bullshit...

'Everyday objects, like the paper clips on your desk or the zipper keeping your pants up, can be examples of brilliant design'

Engineering design? As opposed to artistic design? Paperclips are hardly an artistic expression of the creator - they are an example of the application of scientific principles in the design of an object that solves a problem.

A bent paperclip, however... Well well well...

The intriguing combination of being an engineering student and an artist...

in my opinion, any form of thing such as paper clips or zippers are a piece of art. nature is art. the world, ppl is art in a way. interesting topic
~Henken:iconHenken: Apr 13, 2004, 7:55:15 PM
Designed objects are "art" in the sense that they were invented by the mind and created in the visual word. So by definition (mine of course...feel free to disagree) they hold an important place in the world of design and art.
I think we have, however, segregated the notion of "art" and "design" into two different categories. The exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art is highlighting that the world of design is a link to the imagination as paint on canvas is. To say that design and the invention of everyday objects is the same as or equivalent to 2-dimentional painting is a difficult task...which is why the exhibit is in the Museum of MODERN art. Industrial, Graphic and Architectural designers are unifying their abstractions with everyday life. They are creating art that is intimately involved with everyday life rather than a scene or idea that viewers look at. I do not mean to downplay one or the other, merely to suggest the idea that they are closer to each other than first meets the eye.
