In December 2003, MP3.com closed its doors as an indie music community and was acquired by cNET. cNET then launched
music.download.com several weeks ago as an indie music download center. Today, cNET has launched
MP3.com ... but bearing little, if any, resemblence to its previous form: no indie music, no free downloads. Not even a search which covers
music.download.com.
Instead, MP3.com touts a goal of becoming "
a lighthouse of clarity in the choppy waters of digital music. Our site debuts this month as a premier information source for music and the technology that brings it to life. . . . Our aim is to arm you with the information you need to make decisions that best suit your music-saturated lifestyle. . . . User reviews, playlists, music diaries and a whole new message board system are just the start. Stick around and you'll be a part of the team, armed with the tools you need to be the next music know-it-all on your block."
You can find which digital music services (iTunes, Napster, etc...) have the music you want, and read tech articles relating to the digital music scene. So while it's no longer the ultimate resource for indie music, it's still a valuable tool for digital music junkies.

Don't call it a comeback.
It's a shame it's changed. It used to be a great tool for finding really good obscure bands now it's just a service to help you spend money.
