Spymac's advantage is that it also offers users 100MB free hosting space (with ads; ftp connect), a personal blog, forum, gallery, and community auction service.
Spymac boasts approximately 50,000 members, nowhere near close to the numbers Gmail is attracting. Among other things, spymac lets members connect with POP through third-party programs like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird.
Although Spymac places ads on it's hosted pages, its email service is more than capable, outpacing market giants Yahoo! and Hotmail. As the wars to attract email users to next generation email services heats up, it will be interesting to see where Spymac ends up.
