Introducing the international contest "LOVE / Why?" held jointly by UNESCO and Felissimo Corporation (Japan). This contest accepts concepts and items which are part of today and tomorrow's lifestyle. Entries are invited for everyday items found in the home, fashion, and new high tech. Low tech essentials of todays lifestyle, such as tools and gadgets including communications device, items for home office, travel goods, food, etc. are also accepted.
Objective
This is the fifth Design 21 International Design Award. Co-organized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and Felissimo Group (Japan), the award was launched in 1995 in the spirit of transcending national borders to promote creative force among the generations that would shape our future. It also encourages young designers to use design as part of a process of creating a new lifestyle and as a tool to improve the quality of self-expression and communication. This award is preceded by an invitational exhibition by renowned professionals (referred to as "Part 1 Exhibition") opening in Barcelona, Spain, as part of the Universal Forum of Cultures 2004. Hereafter, this competition is referred to as "Part 2 Exhibition".
Theme
The theme "LOVE / Why?" is chosen to stimulate reflection on the need in the present world for design/concepts that provide a sense of connection, understanding and harmony - between persons, between people and everyday environment. It reflects an underlying objective of "Design 21" to create and maintain human connections through design.
Scope
Entries are invited for everyday items for home, fashion, new high tech and low tech essentials of todays lifestyle, such as tools and gadgets including communications device, items for home office, travel goods, food, etc
Selection Criteria

It is used in everyday life.

It promotes a sense of connection and happiness.

It shows awareness and respect for the environment, including choice of materials and production techniques.

It reflects a creative and responsible vision of lifestyles appropriate in the 21st century and beyond.

It has a potential for the international market.
