A spokesman for Time Inc. confirmed Tuesday that Carl Mydans, a resident of Larchmont, New York, USA, famed for his World War II era photographs and stark images portraying migrant workers during the United States' "Great Depression" of the 1930's, passed away in his home Monday night. The offical cause of death is still unknown, however Mydan's son, Seth Mydan, reported to the BBC that his father passed away due to heart failure in his home Monday.
In 1936, Mydans joined Life magazine as one of its first staff photographers. During World War II, he and his wife,
Life magazine researcher Shelley Smith, became the first ever married photographer and reporter duo to be assigned overseas by the magazine. Mydans recorded photographic images of life and death throughout Europe and Asia during World War II. In 1941, the photographer and his wife were captured by the invading Japanese forces in the Philippines, according to Life magazine archives. It is reported that he refused to take photographs for his captors in exchange for his freedom.
Mydans captured many images of famous leaders in his time, including United States General Douglas MacArthur, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and United States President John F. Kennedy.
Aside from his son Seth, Carl Mydans is also survived by a daughter, Misty.
