It displays an icon in your system tray to let you know if you have unread Gmail messages, and shows you their subjects, senders and snippets, all without your having to open a web browser.

I find it a lot more useable, and user-friendly than, say yahoo or hotmail - I like it so much, that it has not only made all my other web-based accounts redundant, but is currently replacing my outlook-express-based ISP accounts, too!
It combines simplicity with some very nice features - the display of mails as conversations being one of my personal favourites....
