`GeneratingHype on letters, editing and GDship

^lovetodeviate:iconlovetodeviate: reports, August 30
An interview with ex-GD, writer, editor, fascinating person: `GeneratingHype. Here are some tidbits from the interview (which I recommend reading in full):

"Letters presuppose a sort of authenticity, and I truly believe that a story—no matter the form—needs to be authentic and believable.

"Sometimes I wish I had stories such as "I wrote my first published poem at three and a half!" or "I started writing stories at two!", but writing never came easy for me and is still not very easy for me.

The Use of Adverbs in Fiction Writing

=DarcKnyt:iconDarcKnyt: reports, August 29
Adverbs are the endangered species of the adult fiction world. They're frowned on like putting a Baby Ruth bar in a punch bowl at a wedding reception -- not a good idea. They're also indicative of weak writing ... but why? This article covers why adverbs are evil and what you can do to avoid using them.

Poetry Competition: Snippets & Glue

*jahg:iconjahg: reports, August 28, 2004
We've put together a poetry competition called Snippets & Glue which I hope will generate interest in the writing community here on deviantART. Prizes are on offer, of course, and mighty fine they are too.

Note: This information is also available in the Forum topic: Poetry Competition: Snippets & Glue

Prizes
First Prize: A year's subscription to the winner, plus two more to be donated to worthy deviants suggested by the winner.
Second Prize: A three month subscription, plus two more to be donated.
Third Prize: A one month subscription, plus two more to be donated.

So now you know what you want to win, you need to know how to go about it.

Description
Using one of the following poetry snippets, write a poem that uses the lines.

Snippet One
whirling like fanfares,
like the dragon's breath,
like the beast inside,
like a dearth of poetry,
like a twitch of leaves
brown on a carpet of grass

Snippet Two
As this climate changes
the ants weep for loss and danger.
The home they have struggled to build,
its walls warm and bristling with young,
is set against the risk.

Snippet Three
Come again into this child’s land,
where furniture insists on growing up,
and argument berates dissension always.

Other Useful Information
Theme, style, and flow are up to you, the lines can be used individually or together, or the lines can form components of longer lines - it's up to you.

Your entry can be posted to your gallery for comments and criticisms, and you can make as many revisions to it as you feel necessary until the deadline date. Please submit your entry by Note to *jahg once you're ready to do so.

We hope to have the results of the competition posted as soon as possible after the deadline date.

Be inventive, imaginative, and thoughtful, and let's see what you can come up with.

Judging
The judging will be conducted by myself, *Rushy, *nashua, and *Aladdin-Sane. This group it is felt covers the spectrum of poetry in its variety of style and hue.

Deadlines
The competition runs from today Sunday 28th August, 2004 until Saturday 25th September, 2004 and we'll take into account the various time zone issues as and when it becomes necessary.

Rules
There are of course a few rules that you need to keep in mind when entering.

  • If you plan to enter, please send a Note to *jahg, that's me, with the subject line Snippets & Glue so we have some idea how many entries we will receive. You can send this note how by clicking here.

  • The poem must have a minimum of twenty five lines.

  • Only one entry per person please, if you have eight different accounts on deviantART that makes it a little unfair on other people.

  • On the subject of fairness, we must receive a minimum of ten entries for this competition. Without this number, the judging cannot be considered fair, and the competition will have to be cancelled. This is at my discretion, as are all the rules.

  • The decision of the judges, who will for the moment remain anonymous, is final.

  • Needless to say, the judges are not permitted to enter the competition, so you needn't worry about favouritism there.

  • Judging will be relatively informal, using a points out of ten scales from each of the four judges.

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but this is rather absurd...

Is it a joke?

Joke? - no, of course not.

Only the lack of justification makes your previous comment seem disrespectful.

James

I apologize.

I didn't read the directions as carefully as I should have. (You'd think I would have learned after messing up my SAT's)

I thought that all 3 snippets had to be used in one poem, and that just seemed rather convoluted to me..

Now that I understand it better, it seems like a perfectly worthwhile contest.

and you said the judges are annonymous, but you listed them just above... just pointin that out

Dang, yes I noticed the judges thing myself just after I submitted the uneditable news article.

Anyway, regarding your question, you can reorder the lines, but not the words in each line.

James

oh, and is it possible to add words to the lines, for example "like a (final) twitch of leaves"? without the parentheses. or maybe even with them..
