Sony's Playstation Portable (PSP) has been a much anticipated portable game console since rumors of the device started appearing over a year ago. Now those rumors can be dispelled as the device is finally available to the public, at least in Japan. The U.S. and Europe will see the PSP on sale sometime early next year.
While much of the details of the PSP were known, not much was known about the pricing of the portable console. The PSP sold for a discounted launch price of 19,800 yen (or about $189) yesterday, much lower that some had speculated, putting it close to the price range of the competing Nintendo DS (which retails for $150 here in the U.S.).
While the DS seems to have the advantage, already exceeding Nintendo's sales estimates of 500,000 units by year's end (and causing them to use yet another factory to ship out another 300,000 - 500,000 units before January) and the dual screens, one of which is a touch screen, the PSP is able to play audio and video and has a much larger screen than the DS. The PSP will also accept Memory Stick Duo cards, which is a big plus. Sony has also been well known for their huge game library, something Nintendo has struggled to provide for their consoles over the years.
The PSP is not available anywhere but Japan for now, but eBayers are quickly looking to turn a profit for those willing to pay double or triple the price to get their hands on the unit early.

Devious Comments
To hell with paying $600 for ultra gaming hotness. My DS will tide me over until middle January.
Also, for all interested, investing in the PSP Value pack tacks like 20 or 30 dollars onto the price and you get some much needed accessories.
The battery life seems like it might leave something to be desired, clocking it at around 6 hours on graphically light games like Lumines and at around 90 minutes to 3 hours on games like Ridge Racer. Of course, that's constant play, so it will vary over the course of play and all that. Moreover, I'm sure developers will get the hang of the whole battery expending thing and find better ways to store info better and blah blah.
Yep. Also, you can buy a 1GB Memory stick and you've got an ultra media player with a sweet ass screen on it, although playing video is a bit tricky.
YAY!

I got a new car radio the other day. It's completely voice controlled. You shout Metal and it plays Metal, you shout Rock and it plays Rock. The other day some kids ran past my car and i yelled "F***ING KIDS" and it played Michael Jackson.

The one HUGE flaw though, something Sony always manages to have in their products, is that the PSP seems to have a worthless battery life. If the talk is true, and playing Ridge Racer or other graphically intense games leaves only 2-3 hours of play, what's the point? It's like having a cell phone that looks cool but doesn't get a reception half the time (which Sony Ericsson is famous for).
Plus we've been hearing a lot about the slow load times (20 seconds to load the game, 30 seconds for the cut scenes to finish and get to the next level) which make gameplay almost unbearable.
I'm happy with my DS, though I am curious about the PSP. But I'm fine with waiting until they reach the US so I can test one out in the store.
