Photography Interviews VI

`dinyctis:icondinyctis: reports, February 25, 2005

Suzi9mm has taken it upon herself to interview some of the most well-known photographers in deviantART. If you read on, you will get an insight on what motivates these photographers throughout their photographs and more. These interviews have been formatted and edited to better fit the deviantART news format, while remaining as true to the original interview as possible.

This week, *ladymorgana takes the stage. She's been with deviantART for quite some time now, and her work is known throughout the community. Let's get to the interview shall we?

Q You are into dark, gothic type of art and photography, can you tell if you were always interested in dark subject matters and if there was anything in particular in your childhood or youth that affected your interest towards these things?

I always liked horror themed films since I was a child, I didnt have a very happy childhood either but wont enter into detail on this, my life experiences have made what I am, I am quite an extremist person, but I got reasons to be.

Q You are both beautiful and talented, do you think men find it intimidating or not? and how does the 'you're pretty' pick up line work with you...or does it?

MaryI dont think any of my expartners or my actual one found me intimidating once they know me well, I have my feet quite on the earth and I think I am just average if you ask! I have never been treated as anything else in real life I think. I am not sure about the second question, I take it as a compliment but then modeling is one of my day jobs where my image is the product... beauty is in the eye of the beholder so we all have our opinions :)

Q Can you mention artists that you admire or that inspire you?

Dave Mckean and Brom between others that arent that known are pretty good. I try not to be inspired in other people's work but more on themes and things that happen in my life how I do see them.

Q How has deviantART affected your career as an artist/model?

Deviant art has been absolutelly of great help through my career, if it wasnt for this community I wouldnt be a model, I wouldnt have improved
my work as fast, I wouldnt have my actual partner and so on... There is such a big promotion here and so much support from fellow new and old artists. It had also its bad side too, the more known your work is the more stolen is too and I have to spend every single day reporting people using my work in flyers, layouts, icons... wich it has stopped being flattering at all...

Q What are your strengths and weaknesses in art?

Inspiration is the strengh and the weakness too, you dont have it all the time, and when your life work is art, to feel uninspired just kills you...

Q What would be your ultimate career highlight as an artist and model if you set your imagination free?

I have just made my dream come true since I was 15/16, I wanted to work with my favourite band and now is something I am doing not only once but for quite a few future releases too! (I am doing their artworks, promo pictures and appear in their video and covers, how cool is that? *bounces*).In a bigger scale though, I would be just happy if either my art/modeling covers me to live well, have a nice pretty house and kitties :aww: without having to worry about money.

Q What do you eat on an average day?

I dont follow any diets, I eat plenty of chocolate, rice, pasta, chicken and all sorts of naughty food I shouldnt be eating but while I can fit into an 18" waist corset I can spoil myself =P

Q Where does your nickname come from?

When I was 15 I was asked to enter a black metal band, so I had to look for an alias, I always liked witchcraft/arthurican legends so Morgana was "it", since then I have had used the same name... I like how it sounds :)

As usual, here is a taste of what you can find in *ladymorgana's gallery:

We hope you enjoyed this interview, and stay tuned for photography interviews coming your way!

Ah, an interview I was hoping would come about. I'm a silent fan of ladymorgana's work since arriving here at deviantart, and it's always good to know a little bit more about the artist. It's all gravy.

A bit of criticism

Good photos but not my style at all. Dark, gothic bloody female models with a "mysterious" look are as popular on DeviantArt as passé.

Oh, I hope Suzi9mm forgives me but "What do you eat on an average day?" and "You are both beautiful and talented, do you think men find it intimidating or not” hmmmm is this Cosmopolitan now? :P

her works seems more photomanipulated than photography at times as evident in the examples posted in the interview. would be nice is there was more "photo" and less "manip" to consistute a photography interview.
~elestedesanluis:iconelestedesanluis: Feb 25, 2005, 10:16:58 AM
It seems like you have a classic concept of photography... :)
~ceepee:iconceepee: Feb 25, 2005, 10:44:13 AM
Hmm, I must say I find this interview weaker than previous ones... This artist is obviously very talented (even if she doesn't dingle my artistic taste buds as such), and I feel there's plenty more discussion begging to be done about the artistic process (concept, realisation, adaptation during the creative process) which has been done in previous interviews but not this. OK, I'll retract into my hobbit hole now.

If you say so, but there is a difference between the two otherwise they would not be in separate categories here on DA. I think some people use filters and "effects to much on photos to hide the weakness of the shot, I.E lack of focus, poor lighting crappy backgrounds etc... When you start doing all that to an image it ceases to be a photo and becomes a manipulation of that photo.

Call it whatever you want but I don't call it a photo when it obvious that major manipulating is going on in the photo.

So sure I have a classic definition of photography in the sense that I define a photo as a photo and an expression of a photographer’s ability to capture and portray a subject without the need to drastically add, subtract or “manipulate” the image so it is unrecognizable from the original.

I think I'd probably prefer these interviews if the artists featured in them were less well known in the community... it's extremely predictable who is going to be featured in the future... just look in the Daily Favourites list every day, I suspect * coxi will be next.

~lithiumpicnic.. ~ninjakittykat... * kittynn, too much of the same!

Sorry, I just feel these interviews are more a case of "Hey, let's talk to as many gothic artists as we can, and then write about it." than any actual interesting information...

I'm sure the recipe for success on DA isn't talent, it is infact ultimate Photoshopping, mediocre images, blood, goth girls and then more popularity. If only the popular deviants are being interviewed and given more exposure to the community, how is anybody else going to become popular on here?
