Kodak to Stop Making Black-and-White Paper

~nikhil:iconnikhil: reports, Jun 22, 2005
Ending a century-old tradition, Eastman Kodak Co. will soon stop making black-and-white photographic paper, a niche product for fine-art photographers and hobbyists that is rapidly being supplanted by digital-imaging systems.

Kodak said Wednesday it will discontinue production of the paper, specially designed for black-and-white film, at the end of this year. But the world's biggest film manufacturer will continue to make black-and-white film and chemicals for processing.

The paper is manufactured at a plant in Brazil. Kodak declined to specify how many employees would be affected by the production shutdown, which is part of a three-year overhaul to eliminate 12,000 to 15,000 jobs by 2007 and shrink the company's work force to around 50,000.

As the industry shifts rapidly from chemical-based to digital imaging, demand for black-and-white paper is declining about 25 percent annually, Kodak spokesman David Lanzillo said.

sad sad news :(
with the end of film photography, we will loose something
~sonofsanta:iconsonofsanta: Jun 23, 2005, 5:18:40 AM
In the same vein as that old Indian saying about once we've killed every animal and burnt every tree... Once we've rewound every film, developed every print and exposed every shot will we realise how poor digital is in comparison. It's just a stepping stone to film right now; no way can it replace it yet, not in my mind.

urgh... digital is crap, never will it give the same result as film... I know they have developped a new HD technology that compares, but still it has flaws! :frustrated:

I don't know if this has been covered yet, but I was in Sammys Camera a few weeks ago to buy some more Kodak Gold 100 and was informed that Kodak is no longer making it any more. In fact the slowest speed film I could get by Kodak is 200. On a positive note, Fugi is still producing fine Photographic materials.

i wouldn't exactly panic over this. Film photography is never going to go away, at least not in our lifetimes. Compared to the sales volume it once had, it may nearly disappear off the radar. But there will still be a market of hobbyists, artists and professionals who will still want film, chemistry and paper. Somebody will provide it for them. Whether it will be existing companies who have scaled back, or new companies that supply that market, i don't know--but i'm confident someone will.
