NIKON to discontinue film cameras!

=TrendyDNA:iconTrendyDNA: reports, January 13, 2006

Press release from nikon.co.uk.
Wednesday January 11, 2006

Nikon has announced that they are exiting most of the analog film camera market. In a Nikon UK press release, the company said that it is stopping production of most film camera bodies and their associated lenses. Nikon will still offer support to discontinued models and will also sell two high-end film cameras.

We cannot say with absolute certainty that this UK press release refers to Nikon's global business, but the release makes several references to Nikon's global business such as the firm's sales performance.

Hmm - call me nuts but....Nikon doesn't make 35mm film.
~j0yce:iconj0yce: Jan 13, 2006, 3:54:03 PM
What the hell? Whoa. I hope this isnt the begining of the end of film. This makes me nervous, angry, irritated...YARG! I hope either its not true, or a mistake or something. Damn you Nikon! I must go cry now.

Mmhmm. I just read about this. What a shame.
~booradley:iconbooradley: Jan 13, 2006, 4:58:15 PM
7% of their annual sales are from film camera bodies and lenses, down from 14% last year.

digital cameras and associated lenses are up to 75% or so from 42% last year. the rest i think is scanners, printers and accessories.

source: the new york times.

it has been suggested, however, that "discontinuing" their film camera bodies and lenses is an effort to, in an indirect way, rejuvenate their sales. once hobbyists and photographers get wind that there will be no more nikon film cameras, analysts believe their sales will spike dramatically as consumers make an effort to own one before they are all gone. it is also expected that nikon film cameras will become nostalgia items in second hand retail outlets like ebay.

excuse me, i misquoted the nytimes article. here it is: [link]

film cameras are down to 3% of sales from 16% last year. digital is up to 75%, whereas it was 47% three years ago.
