Amazing Art on DA: Mid of July

~Shadowbrooke:iconShadowbrooke: reports, 22h 48m ago
This article is to feature beautifully done art within the month of July.

Featured are artworks that I think deserve attention and admiration. It is easy to be a critic, but not so easy to be an artist. One can eat the cake and simply say, "It's too sweet!" But it is much harder to actually bake the cake. The article aims to celebrate the creative works of these artists, for I think most artists are actually their own worst critics, this is to let them know that their art is greatly appreciated!

Imagine 2006: Second Annual Call for Entries!

*ironhenry:iconironhenry: reports, February 4, 2006
Imagine 2006: Undiscovered Talent of Fantasy
Second Annual Call for Entries!

Dear fantasy artists,
We invite you to join in this collaborative project engaging fantasy artists from around the world.

Imagine is an annual full-color art-book, showcasing the best in talented, yet undiscovered fantasy artists. It is a cooperative project that benefits all artists who become involved. Sixty artworks from fifty unsung masters will be selected for inclusion. Each artist may submit up to 4 works, each of which must have been completed within the prior year. The jury will choose 10 artists for double-page representation and 40 for single-page representation.

Submission of your work is free. Submissions are now open and they will close on February 28th. If you are among the artists chosen for inclusion, you will then be required to pay a contribution fee ($35 US or $47 Au). This fee will cover publishing and shipping costs. It will also net you a copy of Imagine 2006!

So here is what to do…

1. Send me a contact e-mail (bigsoda@icehouse.net), so that I can return to you the necessary forms and documents.
2. Next, ensure that you read all three documents.
3. When you are sure that you agree with the mission-statement and understand all that will be required by those who are selected, copy and paste the agreement form attached and send it to Jenni Mills (jenni@exemail.com.au) with your attached artwork.
3. Artwork for submission must be sized to no larger than 600 by 800 pixels at 72 dpi.

The 2006 Website will be ready for viewing with updated submissions shortly.
Please don’t hesitate to e-mail either of us with any questions or comments.

Best regards,
Ben

Imagine Project 2006 Annual Publication
Mission Statement

The Imagine project was conceived by Jenni Mills in an effort to promote fantasy artists who are currently seeking more exposure for their work, and who do not already have sufficient licensing on their work, commissions, or steady sales of artwork to support a full time career. The group was formed for a specific purpose which is clarified by the statements below.

The aim of the project is to;
1. Collaborate as a group in order to compete in the competitive art industry.
2. Produce an annual professional publication to showcase work.
3. Make contacts in the competitive art industry.

The aim of the publication is to;
1. Encourage artists by including their work in a professionally printed publication.
2. Provide extra exposure for the artists by exploring a market other than the internet.
3. Provide artists with an extra option of income through sales of the publication.

“It is my hope that contributors to the project have a rewarding and enjoyable experience while learning and developing together as professional artists.”
Jenni Mills

Imagine Project 2006 Annual Publication
Terms and Conditions

1. For the purpose of this project an undiscovered artist is regarded as any person over the age of 18 (or 14 with adult consent) that makes less than $5ooo per annum from the sales of their artwork, including licensing and prints.
2. For the purpose of this project, fantasy art is regarded as any image that portrays subjects of a supernatural or magical nature. Dream imagery is acceptable, but no science fiction work will be selected in this publication.
3. Artwork must be 100% original and submitted by the artist. References for pose, anatomy or facial features are acceptable, as long as the resulting artwork is not a direct representation of the reference. No fan art will be selected for publication.
4. Artwork can be of traditional or digital mediums. Photo manipulations may be selected if an appropriate release from the stock photo artist is signed and accompanying the entry and the manipulation is significantly different to the original stock photo.
5. Artwork must be free of copyright from any other publication or agent and must not have been published before.
6. Artists must agree that upon selection of their artwork, they will fulfil the requirements in articles 7 and 9.
7. Upon selection, artists will be required to pay the $35.00 US contribution.
8. A $35.00 US contribution from selected artist goes towards set up costs. The artist will then receive a free copy of the publication, (postage included).
9. Upon selection the artists will be required to format their image to editor’s specifications. The artist does not need to be in possession of the original, however any artwork submitted must be available in 300dpi, approximately 6 inches by 8 inches and free of licensing. This size is necessary for printing.
10. Submission does not guarantee selection for publication. Payment of the contribution fee is only required for accepted artworks.
11. The artist agrees to the use of the image selected for publication in Imagine 2006 and marketing or publicity uses only, and retains copyright of their artwork.
12. The recommended retail price of the finished publication will be $27.99 US.
13. The finished size of the publication is 64 pages on glossy paper, 7 inches by 10 inches.
14. Fifty artists only will be selected for publication. Ten artists will have double page features, including the cover artist, while the remaining 40 will have one artwork selected. Selection of artwork will be by the Imagine Project Board agreement.
15. The cover art will be decided by a vote from selected artists. The cover artist will receive a double page feature. In the event of the cover artists already being selected for a double page, a tenth artist will be selected for a double page feature.
16. Current members of the Imagine Board may submit artworks for selection.
17. In submitting the artist agrees to the sale of the publication by the compiling artist (Jenni Mills) and all other artists selected, for profit. In submitting the artist understands that any royalties collected from retail sales channels will be divided as stated in article 13.
18. Royalties accumulated by Book Surge go to the compiling artist (Jenni Mills) apart from 25% which will be divided equally among the remaining 49 artists. In the event of small amounts, the royalties will accumulate until $20 AU for each artist is available. Royalties can be received by pay pal or cheques in Australian dollars only.
19. A bonus of $20 AU will be paid to each artist should royalties exceed $5000. A bonus will be received for each increment of $5000 royalties accumulated. Bonus payment can be received by pay pal or a cheque in Australian Dollars only.
20. Artists who wish to take advantage of profits from sale, receive the author discount rate of purchase. This discount starts at 25% for 10 copies and increases to 50% for 500 copies purchased. All artists taking advantage of this offer must be aware that Amazon (as owner of the publishing company) has bulk buying power and can charge lower retail prices.
21. Artists who do not wish to profit from direct book sales agree to market the book to the best of their ability in order to increase exposure for all artists involved. Artists not taking advantage of direct sales still receive a percentage of royalties.
22. All artists may take advantage of the special sign up discount rate of purchase. At this time any amount of publications may be ordered at 50% discount. These orders are prepaid before the book is printed. Orders are in addition to the $35 US contribution fee payable at sign up and are not postage free.

This sounds quite interesting...hm, but what I did not understand...you say we may submit unpublished works only, which I understand, but why must it be from the prior year then? (to me prior would mean 2005, correct me if I'm wrong there) if unpublished, the date shouldn't matter, I think  ...besides, I don't have any unpublished works from the prior year, I would (have to) paint something just for that contest.

aside from these points, it sounds interesting, not sure if I have a chance to be chosen, but yeah, I might give it a try though

Sounds like crap. Honostly, you HAVE to pay $35 IF your work gets selected. That's crap.
~Flyttamouse:iconFlyttamouse: Feb 21, 2006, 3:54:12 AM
My work was featured in Imagine 2005 and I'd definitely recommend getting involved. Yes, you have to pay $35 dollars if you're selected, but that goes towards making the project happen (and your personal copy of the book).

I will be submitting work produced in 2006, which is what I originally thought was the intention, though it's a bit confusing. You should definitely submit - I just had a quick look at your gallery and your work looks great!

Thank you much =) that's encouraging
still this article was confusing me a little, but yeah, I think as long as it has been unpublished, it should be able to submit works from 2006 as well. at least I hope so!

Other well-established artist-annuals have an obligatory entrance fee. That means you pay whether you are selected or not. Also, the artists featured in these annuals never see a dime off of the sales figures. They also don't receive a copy of the book.

This is a cooperative project.

I did something very similar when I was younger, except that it was for poetry. And it ended up being a rip off. The majority of callings like this I've seen were they ask you to pay for so an so were a rip off. I guess they're not all the same, but I would always proceed with caution with something like that.
