It's hard for me to generalize and say what I liked in all of these images as I was looking for what I always look for in photography - a combination of technique, message and emotion. The balance of those is very different for each image, the combination of those just works for me and the photograph grabs my attention and doesn't let go. Overall I want to say I was very impressed with the submissions to this contest. Awesome job photographers.

Self-portraits have always fascinated me. As per the definition, photographic self-portraits are works of art where both photographer and model are one person. This means they can be something very unique that cannot be constructed using a separate model and photographer. There is usually no element of a second mind that will always exist in standard portraiture. Of course there will be influence and ideas used that the self-portrait photographer has drawn from other places whether consciously or not but the execution of the image is still only down to an individual. When it came to choosing my favourites, I did what I always do with art - if the image pops out at me for one reason or another in a positive way then it has my attention. Basically these reasons can be a mixture of creative ideas, originality, telling a story, emotion or any technical aspect such as exposure, lighting, composition and so forth. It was not an easy job due to so many fantastic submissions but as a rather poor self-portrait photographer myself I feel honoured to have been on this judging panel.

This contest was close to home for me because *I-- have been shooting self-portraits for quite a number of years now, and enjoy doing so very much. Self-portraits give us the ability to capture who we are, (as we see ourselves), as the years go on. When judging this contest what I was really looking for was a clear, creative representation of ones self. A shot that captures who the artist is, gives a glimpse into their daily lives, their passions, who they are, if only for a split second. Not so much a contrived portrait but one that shows their quirky/serious/fun/artistic/imaginative side. Congratulations to all who entered, there really were some stellar entries.

A portrait is nothing more than a captured moment in time. This applies to self-portraits too. What I wanted to see was a representation of how that person felt at that particular moment that they took the photo. How did they feel about themselves? How did they think others perceived them? The ones that communicated this message to me the strongest were my top picks.

I was looking for a self portrait that would show a little more than a face. A face itself is not a minus, but often other things in our life can describe ourself even better. I wanted a self portrait to tell something about the person, their state of mind, mood, personality or life. There were several shots that had qualities which i liked a lot.
