Imagine the Imagination

*gromyko:icongromyko: reports, October 4
Art is distinctively a product of imagination, of that faculty of the mind which has to do with perceiving images, —the image of one thing in the form of another. While science, therefore, may find a single form interesting in itself, art, at its best, never does. It looks for another form with which the first may be compared

Overlooked Traditional Art - Lithograph

=darkstormlord:icondarkstormlord: reports, May 2, 2006
This series of articles, Overlooked Traditional Art, is intended to feature some of the best, new submissions from different subcategories in the Traditional Art Gallery.

This time, the focus will be on one of the smallest galleries on deviantART, Printing>Lithograph.

Lithography is drawing on stone. There is no cutting into a material as in woodcuts or line engravings. The printing and non-printing areas of the plate are all at the same level, as opposed to intaglio and relief processes in which the design is cut into the printing block.

An artist uses a greasy ink or crayon to make a drawing on the surface of a special kind of yellowish limestone. The drawing can be by pen or crayon, or painted and textured in different ways. Many stones can be used with separate ones for each color. Because grease repels water, each stone can then be treated and washed a number of ways before paper is finally applied to it in a lithographic press to make a print.

Modern high-volume lithography is used to produce posters, books, newspapers, packaging, credit cards, decorated CDs – just about any smooth, mass-produced item with print on.

The above lithograph works have less than 10 comments and less than 10 favs at the time the article was written. Try to give the artists the recognition they deserve.

I love litho work, even thou its the one area of printmaking I've never been able to master. Etching and silkscreen have been the two areas of printmaking I've ended up focusing on, so all power to those featured litho artists for producing some amazing printwork.
