Max Barrys Guide to the Better Novel

`xork:iconxork: reports, July 25, 2006
A couple of articles from novellist Max Barry's (Jennifer Government, Syrup) website, maxbarry.com, courtesy of `alienhead.

Firstly, Barry offers his thoughts on editing. When he was editing his first (unpublished) novel, it didn't go too well for Mr. Barry:
"I ended up doing the worst thing possible: I edited the whole thing based on one person’s opinion. No, wait, that’s not the really stupid part: this guy hadn’t even read it. But he was an agent, and he said, 'Novels should be around 90,000 words.' So I thought: Okay, there’s something to fix. And I cut 40,000 words from it.

Killed that book dead, I did. Not that it was ever going to be a bestseller. Or even publishable. But it was better before I messed with it."
Barry also has some things to say about words-per-day goals:
"For the book I’m working on now, I’m trying something new: a maximum number of words per day."

Nice article. It's always nice to see someone elses point-of-view on editting. :)

BTW, I know there should be an apostrophe in the article title. It's a dA bug. They tell me it'll be fixed in v5.

Also, I know the article title being a reference to a Swedish TV show might not work too well on an international site, but I think it's funny, dammit! That's good enough for me.

:w00t: Jennifer Government was a great book. Syrup wasn't bad, either.

I can't imagine ONLY writing 500 words a day. That's like going to pee and then stopping mid-way through. It's painful and it burns! :(

Wow, that's bad advice. "Take off a few 100 words.."

@_@ I can't belive that! Novels are good not cuz of word limits, but becuase of the time and effort put into them. ^_^

I think the idea was that if you push for a minimum, you often end up writing lots of crap because you need to write so many words. A maximum ensures that you'll keep good stuff and dump crap. I think that also means writing 2,000 words to meet a maximum of 500.
`alienhead:iconalienhead: Jul 31, 2006, 4:13:51 PM
Yeah, that makes sense.
