`SparrowSong on writing, critique and her passions

^lovetodeviate:iconlovetodeviate: reports, September 28
An interview with writer, critic (critiquer?), lit senior, `SparrowSong. Here are some tidbits:

“I like that my passions change. If nothing else, it gives me more to write about.”

“Everyone has heard the expression, ‘Give a man a fish, he eats for a day; teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.’ If you don’t learn to critique, you will always be dependent on others to help you instead of being able to do it by yourself.”

“Art changes how we view the surface of the world to reveal truth or beauty—or both—underneath.”

The Best of the Best Project - Released

*writersdA:iconwritersdA: reports, August 2, 2006

A few weeks ago the staff of *writersdA asked the community to present us with the best of the best from the Literature Gallery. We've recieved your submissions, and now it's time for use to release what you've all given to us.

With each piece there is a description about it and what makes it unique. We encourage you all to check out each one, for they all have their own special meaning in someone's heart. Now, we present you with the Best of the Best.

Please keep in mind that (MC) denotes mature conent.

"This piece is just marvelous. The way it's written isso superb
and greatly detailed. The piece means a lot to the author,
so it should be handled with care when read. With a piece like
this, there is always a deeper and more meanful answer to
the things it presents to the reader. Be sure to pay close
attention, and enjoy the piece for what it is."

"Why did I choose this peice? It is short, yes. And it is simple,
yes. But I think that that is what makes this peice so strong,
even though the words are so delicate. It doesn't take a lot
of words to pack a lot of meaning, and this certainly is proof.
Read the description to learn about the project it's part of and you
may love it even more. Be sure to read the others in the series as well =)"

"It's not strictly a poem but it has some internal rhythm and logic,
I even recorded myself singing it because it really, really inspired me.
As for the subject - it's very grim and dark but it's so beautiful. It has
no gore or anything nasty in it, like the height of beauty in a depressed mood.
It's not organized in separate lines but if one did, they'd see a very vivid
picture in every line, like this: 'dress the joker in black', 'the boatman waits
only for you' and so on. I know the entire piece by heart and I sometimes sing it
when I'm alone and I feel good, it doesn't make me sad, it just makes me realise
how fragile life is and how we should value every moment of it."

's Choice: by ~terrorwhite

"It's about friendship and losing friends. I chose it because of the way she uses
"falling leaves" to symbolize losing friends"

's Choice:
by ~ahollowvoice (MC)

"This is something that I would never be able to do, and I admire ~ahollowvoice's
ability to open himself up like that. I'm more shy and I dont open up easily,
and here he puts himself out there for everyone on dA to see. I admire him and I love
the way he wrote this poem. It's very fluid (in my opinion) and it really lets you see
how HE feels and what HE thinks, as opposed to it being written about someone else."

We'd like to thank everyone that participated, and hope that you all have enjoyed what you've seen here. If you have any questions about this project, or would like to participate in the future, please note *writersdA.

Thank you for reading!

To be totally honest I was very disappointed by this feature. At least all of the several featured pieces that I checked were very low quality writing, something that I just don't see as feature-worthy no matter how hard I try.
`lazybutt:iconlazybutt: Aug 3, 2006, 10:11:51 AM
The point of this feature was to get the community involved. I could easily see how you would feel this way, as I feel it too, but we wanted our members to be able to feature what they thought to be high quality work. Maybe they aren't the ones to be judged, as we asked this from them, but at least give them props for participating.

Maybe next time we do this you'll decide to join in.

Thank you for your comment.

Although I agree with you, I was going to tell you to critique the pieces instead of whining about it here. But then I noticed that two of the pieces are crit discouraged and one has comments disabled altogether. So I shall join ya in whining about it here.

That's disappointing. At the very least the writers featured should be open to critique.

Critiquing someone's prose or poetry is an awesome thing to do.

that's pretty much what my thinking was too. it's a shame because it's a good thing to feature good writing, and the gds (and of course, news writers like yer good self) are trying to do more to promote that. :(
