Every gallery has images from people who are beginners, or don't have any asperation of becoming better with their art. It's not going to change just because a form of art has it's own section now.

However, this move is huge for the community who work in that type of art. No longer can people justify bashing artists just because of the type of art they produce. Some people are upset over this move and they need to see what a treasure they've been given. People are always asking me for a fractal gallery set up like this and I have to tell them no. For any art to have it's own spot is a treasure, people need to think more globally and be thrilled they have their own neighborhood to play in, so to speak. Looking forward to this becoming one of the most growing and active communities here.

Yeah I believe this was a bad decision. I have no idea why they would make Anime seperate from everythign else. It is an art form, and all the art forms are organized by medium and now Aniem is randomly on its own. makes no sense

It's not randomly on it's own. Anime was not singled out, the big catagories were all bumped up.
Photography, Cartoons and Comics, Anthro, they were all bumped up too.
They were big enough to get some breathing room.

Anime was flooding all the other catagories before, making it near impossible to browse art without getting bombarded with anime. The other art never had a chance to be seen.
Now, if someone wants to search for anime, they can get anime without having to deal with other stuff and if you want to search for anything else, you can actually find it.

In my opinion, there are two obvious problems in this new categorization.

1 - anime "style" doesn't really exist.

I can't even think of a consistent definition of a supposed "anime style",
- first because anime and manga just mean Japanese animation and books, and we aren't even talking about animated stuff here,
- second because in japanese animation/manga you can find an incredibly wide variety of styles that have sometimes nothing in common,
- and finally because nowadays there are many non japanese people who mix this eastern influence with their own art culture, making its limits even less obvious.

Building a whole section based on something that subjective will only lead to more miscategorizations and will enforce the stereotypes that sure exist about "anime". And I'm afraid that DA's definition of anime may be just that : a list of stereotypes.

I expected a more open-minded point of view from an "art" site. Now this new categorization looks just like the ones in those websites that sell ripped pics for mobilephones.

Too bad for the artists who wanted people to see more in their work than those stereotypes. Too bad for me, for example : if someone browses my gallery now, and chooses to look at my "digital drawings", he won't see 90% of my pics because they are removed in the anime gallery... a section that makes no sense to me.

Sorry, but they are still digital drawings, and they belong to the general galery like any other. I don't see why people should have to choose between my drawings OR my so-called "anime" art. I don't understand why it's not displayed anymore in the wider categories they logically belong to, such as the digital or traditional ones.

And I don't think the whole "protection from anime bashing" argument is really valid. Flamers like to flame, you know. Whiners like to whine. They won't stop because you've hidden the stuff they dislike in a dark corner. I'm actually sure they'll have great fun complaining about the supposed "miscategorized" pics still flooding the main gallery.

2 - The categorization system has become a total mess because of these new sections (I mean, worse than before.)

You have to choose between things you shouldn't have to. Drawing are digital and anthro, not digital OR anthro. It can be a fanart made on an oekaki board, it's not an oekaki OR a fanart. There's no logic in the structure. Technics are compared to content which is compared to media which is compared to a supposed "style"... nonsense.

Tags, anyone ?

You have a good point, but the domination of Anime and other styles could have been fixed with a little bit of programming. However, because of the insensibility of comparing styles to mediums makes it very confusing for browsing deviants, visitors, and even submitters

When Something is submitted into Tradtional art >aintings> Sub Cat
and you wasnt to browse through Traditional art> Paintings and you get pages after pages of anime and very little of anything else, that means that the catagories need to be restructured to give everyone an equal change.
Unless you go typing in some special things into the search to exclude anime and Manga but allow everything else, you didnt have much opportunity before. Visitors, submitters or browsing deviants often wouldnt be able to memorize the special search functions to get better search results. Searching shouldnt be a science.

A browsing Deviant is very clearly shown a list of catagories, with the most popular being right up front and easy to find with the more general catagories.
I dont see how its any more confusing than before for a browsing deviant or random visitor.
