reports, August 17, 2006The IAU (Int. Astronomers Union) has decided that Pluto is to remain as a planet and 3 more are to be included in the solar system with the new definition. The definition is that a celestial body should be orbitting a star, is not a star itself and has enough mass to create the gravitation to pull itself into a spherical shape. The astronomers are to vote for the definition on 24 Aug. The newest planets along with Pluton will be named "Plutonians" as the planets that orbit the sun in more than 200 days. There are more candidates that might be accepted as planets. That's from Reuters. also check [link] for details.
Now that's news.. But there's more to it. The names of the new planets after Pluto are Xena, Charon and Ceres respectively. Let's have a look at the names shall we?
Xena: The wild lady warrior in that famous TV show. Ah but she's more than that. She's a historical figure in that she played a main role in the destruction of the reign Olympian Gods of the Greek Mythology and brought monotheism and she has an important role in the birth of the Christianity as well (consult your google and wikipedia for details).. Now how weird is that? They've actually named the 10th planet after the killer of the Greek Gods where the 9 planets before that are named after the Roman Gods (which are practically the same gods with different names).
Charon: The guy who carries the dead on River Styx at Hades on his boat.. But why name the 11th planet after him instead of 10th, after Pluton which is the equivalent of Hades in Greek Myth.?? It was considered the moon of Pluto before, so it's even more weird. Plus, his name means "fierce brightness", which I don't think suits a planet that far away from the sun.
Ceres: I'll paste this directly from wiki; "In Roman mythology, Ceres was the goddess of growing plants (particularly cereals) and of motherly love." Cereals! I'm not saying anything else about this, figure it out yourselves...
I propose naming the planets after Pokemons. seriously.. The earth would be Squirtle. Oh yes it would.. We're all living on a turtle's back.

Charon was named under the naming system for moons, and that is why he got a greek name, and it was named for being associated with Pluto, who is often misattributed to Hades.
Ceres was a planet a few hundred years ago and it got the boot from the list. (Which is why it already has a roman name)
