How to protect against fake job offers

~Suirebit:iconSuirebit: reports, August 17, 2006
:bulletblue:Definition of a fake job

As =DJTalyn stated very well, more than half of the job offers posted [on DeviantArt Forum] are fake. By fake I mean that you will submit your work and never hear from that person again. You won't get paid or receive any kind of compensation. There are genuine offers but they are so slim that you have to be very careful. The 3 main signs of a fake are jobs posted from an empty deviantART account, offers that seem too good to be true and mentions of a company or organization that does not exist.

:bulletblue:Protection

In response to this growing threat, here are some ways to protect yourself against them, gathered from my past experience:

1) Before accepting a contract take your time to know the person. Talk with him/her on a messenger software, ask various questions.

2) Always ask for an upfront payment, even if you don't mean that. Depending on the client's answer you will be able to figure out fast if this job offer is serious or not! Don't be afraid to ask it - if you loose the client because of this question, the job wasn't serious anyway!

3) While creating the image offer only previews to your client; NEVER offer full sized images unless specified in the contract. Don't give away the final product until you receive your payment! If the job was fake it's better to have wasted only your time rather than your time and the image!

~Praetoris added: If they still demand full-size, watermark it. :) Always watermark all your work if it's for someone you're not familiar with.

4) Don't accept jobs that sound too vague or if the one who hires you has no reference.
Always ask for links to previous contracts, or towards the company's site.

5) Make sure you always sign a contract, even if digitally. Make sure you CLEARLY state there what will be your and client's final rights of the image.

=DJTalyn adds: Before taking your time to fill an order, make sure you directly contact the person, research any facts or names mentioned and make out a contract.

If you have more questions, feel free to post them here or contact me. I'll answer them asap :)
