On the 18th of August 2006, an Irish company called Steorn made a claim that they have developed a technology that produces "Free Energy".
Now, if you know anything about physics, I know exactly what you are thinking, this is impossible. The "Principle of the Conservation of Energy" law states,
"Energy can not be created or destroyed, it can only be converted from one form to another"
But, Steorn claim their technology has an efficiency greater than 100%, aka it produces more energy than is put in.
Obviously, their claim is not being accepted by the scientific community very well due many such claims over the past years turning out to be hoaxs. But, Steorn have issued a challenge for 12 of the most cynical scientists to test the technology and prove them wrong.
Obviously, if this tehcnology proves to be viable, it will change the world as we know it, as power is one of the main driving forces of the world and a large part of the world economy.

Sorry, but if this was not a hoax, you would have heard of it everywhere before.
Why don't you google a bit before posting something?
Here are a few interesting links about this (I had to fav them somewhere, because it's like the 50th time I see this on the web...):

Not about Steorn, but a demonstration that it is simply impossible to have unlimited energy: [link]

LOBSTER is not a crime.
Steorn have existed for a few years. They already have made a claim last year about unlimited energy, which proved to be just some advertizing. And it worked, since I now know the name of Steorn.
There are dozens of claims like this one every year. Steorn say they asked scientists to come and see their inventions, but they "didn't want to give the name of the scientists" and the scientists "didn't want to talk to the public". How interesting.
But you can still hope!
And as I stated, I am aware of all the past hoaxs. Just their approach is a lot different more public.
We shall see what happens, which will probably turn out to be nothing, but if it is proven viable, then hurrah!

But they also told the press that "a team of famous scientists" had seen the machine, that "none wished to talk publicly", and that "they wouldn't tell the name of the scientists" - exactly like Steorn already did a few years ago when they first claimed to have created such a machine, and have never revealed it since...
Oh well, we'll see soon.

They need to raise billions every time they do some private research, and therefore can't allow themselves to spend a single buck in advertizing.
The idea of Steorn's CEO is very clever. It's the second time he makes such a claim, and, therefore, people start to know the name of Steorn. If he hadn't done it, who would have searched for a R&D company outside the USA, and, worse, in Ireland, a country which was still in civil war a few years ago? Noone!
This is just one more shot at public notoriety, and it seems to work extremely well...
There is also a fact which makes perpetual movement or unlimited energy impossible, it's entropy (if you don't know what is it, then read a bit of Stephen Hawking's works). Until he demonstrated entropy, we used to think that a machine without friction could be created. But that machine would still move energy, and that entropy has to come from somewhere and to end somewhere. Except in space, things have to be powered, and have to power something. And even in space, there are still rays coming from stars, so there is truly no "0 entropy" anywhere...
Oh well, like I said, lets wait and see.
