The only one I must compete with is...myself. And I'll always be the winner. :)

This contest wants on one hand to show that every single artist can improve (also motivate viewers to also keep practicing and never quit their art!) and that to improve is much more important to compare one's art with what it was in a previous moment, than compare it with other's art.

Microsoft Zune - iPod Contender?

˘elusive:iconelusive: reports, September 15, 2006
Its been awhile since Apple has come out with its industry-crushing product, the iPod, however Microsoft plans to step into the arena, and bring it's own contender: The Microsoft Zune.

Releasing near the holiday season, the Zune will ship in three (3) colours: White, Brown and Black. The Zune will also feature ability for video playback, music, radio, and of course, pictures. The device will be manufactured by Toshiba, and sold under the Microsoft brand, and will also come with its own version of media player software (equivilent to iTunes for the iPod). A feature I noticed that is interesting, is the ability to wirelessly transfer your music from the device to another device (up to 3 times a week), so you can send your friend a song you're listening to, if you feel the need. However, the song after 3 days the song is removed and flagged, and once your Zune is connected to its media player software, it will try to locate that song for you on the Zune Marketplace (equivilent to iTunes Store).

There isn't a lot more to be known about this product, other than the fact it'll offer WiFi abilities. The price and official release date are unknown yet, as Microsoft has yet to set any release dates or news postings about a price, so we'll just have to wait and see until this holidays season to find out if the Zune is a contender for Apple's iPod, or just another product to confuse us when we go shopping for an mp3 player in a world already saturated by multimedia devices.

More information on the Microsoft Zune can be found here: [link]

ive seen so many "ipod-killers"... and still, the ipod refuses to die, regardless of the competition's quality. i think this is typical microsoft me-tooism tho, and will end up as another "alternative" in a market where supply has outgrown demand. i dont like the idea of wireless transfer either, especially since it sounds so drm-ish, but i guess some people could use it. the video playback, radio and picture features, however, are pretty useless. my current mp3 player can do all that, and ive never taken advantage of it. why should i? i already have a computer. if anyone needs this stuff on the go, then consider a cameraphone, which lets you actually take the pictures and record the video, already has wireless transfer without drm, can access the internet and, oh yes, can be used as a phone.
im not liking the way portable devices are going. i can buy an mp3 player that shows video and pictures and lets me connect to people, or i can buy a pda that shows video and pictures and lets me connect to people, or i can buy a phone that shows video and pictures and lets me connect to people. can anyone spot the subtle feature overlap? im just waiting to see which one will swallow up all the others... not that it matters cos when that happens itll just be called an iDevice and everyone will have one. except me. i'll be cuddling my beefy desktop pc and whining about the good old days

Yeah it's definately getting a ridiculous point in the market. Someone has to come out with a feature that sets everyone apart, else it's just going to be like you said - an alternative.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: iPod has been out for nearly five years now, I believe, and it has established itself as the premiere mp3 player out there. I don't think any mp3 player can out-do the iPod, even if it has better features at a lower price. iPod has name recognition which other players do not.

hmm new features... how about iPong, the classic arcade game with a gaudy facelift and a clickwheel interface?

Like I said yesterday on dAmn, that has to be the ugliest portable media player ever. It looks like an early/mid nineties design prototype of what it's supposed to be. It looks kinda retro, but not the cool way of it. The black one is quite okay, but the brown (wtf...) and white one look like utter trash.
As for being an iPod contender, I think MS is years too late with this.
