Its been awhile since Apple has come out with its industry-crushing product, the iPod, however Microsoft plans to step into the arena, and bring it's own contender: The Microsoft Zune.
Releasing near the holiday season, the Zune will ship in three (3) colours: White, Brown and Black. The Zune will also feature ability for video playback, music, radio, and of course, pictures. The device will be manufactured by Toshiba, and sold under the Microsoft brand, and will also come with its own version of media player software (equivilent to iTunes for the iPod). A feature I noticed that is interesting, is the ability to wirelessly transfer your music from the device to another device (up to 3 times a week), so you can send your friend a song you're listening to, if you feel the need. However, the song after 3 days the song is removed and flagged, and once your Zune is connected to its media player software, it will try to locate that song for you on the Zune Marketplace (equivilent to iTunes Store).
There isn't a lot more to be known about this product, other than the fact it'll offer WiFi abilities. The price and official release date are unknown yet, as Microsoft has yet to set any release dates or news postings about a price, so we'll just have to wait and see until this holidays season to find out if the Zune is a contender for Apple's iPod, or just another product to confuse us when we go shopping for an mp3 player in a world already saturated by multimedia devices.

im not liking the way portable devices are going. i can buy an mp3 player that shows video and pictures and lets me connect to people, or i can buy a pda that shows video and pictures and lets me connect to people, or i can buy a phone that shows video and pictures and lets me connect to people. can anyone spot the subtle feature overlap? im just waiting to see which one will swallow up all the others... not that it matters cos when that happens itll just be called an iDevice and everyone will have one. except me. i'll be cuddling my beefy desktop pc and whining about the good old days

Long answer: iPod has been out for nearly five years now, I believe, and it has established itself as the premiere mp3 player out there. I don't think any mp3 player can out-do the iPod, even if it has better features at a lower price. iPod has name recognition which other players do not.

As for being an iPod contender, I think MS is years too late with this.
