`SparrowSong on writing, critique and her passions

^lovetodeviate:iconlovetodeviate: reports, September 28
An interview with writer, critic (critiquer?), lit senior, `SparrowSong. Here are some tidbits:

“I like that my passions change. If nothing else, it gives me more to write about.”

“Everyone has heard the expression, ‘Give a man a fish, he eats for a day; teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.’ If you don’t learn to critique, you will always be dependent on others to help you instead of being able to do it by yourself.”

“Art changes how we view the surface of the world to reveal truth or beauty—or both—underneath.”

Turkish novelist acquitted

`xork:iconxork: reports, September 21, 2006
Elif Şafak has been acquitted of charges of belittling Turkishness. The charges were dropped at the prosecutors request.

As reported earlier, Şafak faced up to three years in jail for comments made by a character in her best-selling novel, The Bastard of Istanbul. The case was one of over sixty similar charges against Turkish writers under Article 301 of the Turkish Penal code, which criminalises "public denigration" of Turkishness.

Şafak's case was the first where the prosecutor used his power to drop the case.

This Article 301 sounds terrible, though.

Great relief to read that one, but it's still a bit saddening to know that nothing's preventing it from happening again.

Thanks for the update :salute:
