Let's keep our perspective

`davincipoppalag:icondavincipoppalag: reports, 2d 17h ago
My friend posted this in his journal and I think it's important enough that the whole world should take a moment to reflect on it. Yes..the world lost a talented performer and artist in Michael Jackson..but there are many more tragic deaths occurring daily all over the world that go unnoticed. Please give these heroes your prayers and thanks too.

^kkart:iconkkart: reports, July 14

Gangs:No Peace Until There Is Peace In Our Streets

*DAPoliticalForum:iconDAPoliticalForum: reports, July 12
:star: Gangs in the United States are not a new or recent phenomenon. Their history has been traced back to the post Revolutionary War days and originally they formed as a means of self-protection and as social clubs.

An Artists' Self-Respect

~Inexistences:iconInexistences: reports, July 14
The value of a favorite or a watch - how to use DeviantArt as a successful artist building community, and not a system for self-advertisement.

Perspective on Sight

~Skytrite:iconSkytrite: reports, July 15
Everyone has their own perspective, the way we percieve things is changable and uncertain. Yet, undeterringly we see things as good and bad, beautiful and ugly. I suppose this is my perspective on that kind of sight.

George Carlin on Religon

~TRegnier2795:iconTRegnier2795: reports, July 16
He's gone now, but George Carlin was a philosopher as much as a comedian. When he told a joke, he did it to make us think, and that is why he was a such a success: he told it like it is.

Here's lookin' at you, George.

Proposal to welcome popular artists to staff

=tyhopho:icontyhopho: reports, September 24, 2006
Rationale: I was hardly proud of my own response initially to the arrival of a musician on DA (referenced in many journals). In a sense the following is designed to deal with some guilt and also lay out the results of some thinking and debate Ive engaged in over the last few days.

Ive always believed (and have been taught through my profession) never to show favourites and to treat all others who you work with with fairness and to not show preference at all. Although human nature will mean that showing favour to others does happen, equality is an ideal to strive towards, especially within a community.

The justification for the perks given to this artist can be understood from one point of view and it is following on from that point of view of the artists presence being of benefit to DA that I would like to propose the following both with regard to the musician in question and any further artists who arrive at this site with extensive real world reknown and exposure.

1. 'Hire' him or her to staff on the basis of the admin's choice and criteria.
2. Their staff category would become something like 'DA art ambassador'
3. If there are a number of GD's already selecting DD's in their genre give them the ability to 'guest select' a DD or two a week or at frequency suitbale for that gallery.
4. The artist takes part in the occasional chat (im aware this would have happened anyway) but formalise it
5. any further suggestions welcome

Through this the issues of 'perks' been given to another member becomes moot. I did notice that no one is bothered with new staff being hired to $ positions but then they obviously are working very hard for DA, therefore formalising the 'hiring' of artists such as this musician to become staff or ambassadors to DA should help quell a number of site concerns by showing that these individuals will be conributing to the site.

Yours,

Brian Sharland

excellent - it begins!

So if another artist signs up to deviantART you're saying just slap a staff symbol next to his or her name and let him or her use that as a shadow to hide behind, right?
=tyhopho:icontyhopho: Sep 24, 2006, 1:08:39 PM
what would they need to hide?

Awesome and well thought out :)

thank you - its merely an idea and i hope it will provoke some discussion
!B52:iconB52: Sep 24, 2006, 1:17:52 PM
The fact that they have signed up to deviantART and been awarded a higher status than some of the members that have been here at deviantART for years, it's called favourtisim. Lets not be stupid here somebody 'famous' would not do any *real* work for deviantART but would use a staff status to hide behind.
=tyhopho:icontyhopho: Sep 24, 2006, 1:23:21 PM
i'll be honest and say that its a way round 'favouritism' - by providing these artists with the ability and formal structure to themselves benefit the community it in a way justifies any 'perks' they receive and will hopefully ensure that what they do do for the site has a greater impact.
!B52:iconB52: Sep 24, 2006, 1:28:31 PM
Whatever you say, you just don't see the bigger picture.
=tyhopho:icontyhopho: Sep 24, 2006, 1:33:51 PM
which part do i not see? the thing is is that just as much as this is an idea which trys to cover all points i fully realise that there are things which i have not considered. i am trying through what i have written to acknowledge the bigger picture in understanding the effect of the presence on the site of artists like the one discussed recently.
