It's chosen for not only it's subtlety, but also it's innate ability to antique a piece of digital artwork quickly and easily by even the most inexperienced manipulators. Personally, I feel it's one of the most versatile resources too, primarily due to the fact that it's almost universally applicable across the photomanipulative spectrum, whereas rust and paint are primarily used within the macabre and dark arenas.
