The butter legion- a socialist movement/mass colab project I started, to trigger artistic change and evolution in Da artists (mainly my watchers), to make them more active and dedicated on DA. I have been a member of DA for over three years. I admit that when I first began, I did not give credit to the stock accounts/websites where I found my sources. However, I have since learned my lesson. Stock photographers give photo manipulators like myself the necessary ingredients to create, invent, imagine, conceptualize, and transcend. It is not just about giving credit, but recognizing the stock as an art piece in itself.
On occasion, I have noticed a number of photomanipulations being featured as Daily Deviations that give absolutely no mention of where they got their stock. I am not criticizing the fact that they were chosen because that matter is left entirely up to the discretion of the gallery directors and deviants with privileges. However, those amazing works of art that turn seemingly ordinary images into something extraordinary would be nothing without the stock that made them. Photomanipulators (and artists in general who use other people's images in their artwork) should have the foresight and decency to recognize their efforts and contributions. This goes especially for those deviants who have achieved massive fame and recognition. It's not nice to forget the "little people" who helped you get where you are today.
Please don't misunderstand my intentions with this article. I am not making demands or giving orders to everyone that ever uses a stock photo. It is merely a friendly request that I am sure the stock artists and your audience would appreciate.
i agree. now granted, i honestly don't know where i got most of my brushes, but i haven't used them on anything submitted though. but i feel bad not knowing in the event that i DO use them. but i'm all for giving the credit if i get a POLITE request saying i used something that belongs to them.

Well this is certainly true in spades. I go out of my way to credit those who contribute to my art and like yourself it annoys the hell out of me when others fail to do the same.
Crediting stock owners and notifying such that their stock has been used is self-beneficial too, so it makes no sense why some people don't do it. When you thank the person who contributed to your art, that's not only one more person who will see your art, but potentially many more who visit that stock artist's page.
a good habit that I have gotten into is creating subdirectories with artist names so whenever i download something it goes into that artist's directory. That way it doesn't matter when I use something, I always know where it came from.
Last time I checked, one of the rules for receiving a DD in the Photomanipulations category was to list your stock sources. At least, it has been that way since ^kuschelirmel has been GD. I think it's a great development, and hope it puts more pressure on artists to do so. After all, no matter what you do with the stock, it's still the original picture that can make or break the artwork.
A good habit to get into, in my opinion, is to make two folders in your bookmarks: One for random stock that you particularly like, and one for the stock you are currently using. That way, you can always have a reference that doesn't take up a lot of room and isn't too much of a hassle.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
DaVinci, Picasso, Monet... these are all names I'm sure you've heard of before. They are the Masters of the art world and their talents are world renowned. But have you ever looked at their pieces and thought to yourself "I could do better" or "that would look awesome in a comic style"? Well here's your chance. How would you have painted DaVinci's Mona Lisa? Show me using only Vectors.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More

It really is self-defeating not to do this.
