The purchase comes after AMD looks to boost its market placement in such things as mobile computing, and digital multimedia. As of 2008, ATI aims to build graphic units that integrate the graphic and processor units together.
What makes this really interesting is how AMD is a partner of nVidia, and ATI a partner of Intel. After the trade completed, market analysts expected this to be a bad choice for ATI. Shares from AMD actually dropped 4.8% in mid-day trading after the acquisition.
If you're in disbelief of this (much like I am), you can see the changes for yourself. Just visit the ATI website
[link] and see the changes in effect. No longer does the ATI logo appear, it's an AMD branding.
Is this the revolution the gaming world has been looking forward to? Merging CPU and GPU manufacturers into one company? Only time will tell.
