Who Likes Short Shorts?

~sumants:iconsumants: reports, November 10, 2006
*suture, that's who. For the time being, we'll leave out the ultra-tiny garment and focus on our other guilty pleasure - the drabble.

Did you mean Dribble?

No. A drabble is a form of short prose, consisting of exactly 100 words. The challenge is to construct a complete story - beginning, middle and end - within this extremely condensed space. As in the poetic haiku, the drabble requires the writer to use brevity to his/her advantage.

Read up on drabbles here, here and here.

So what do you want me to do?

Write, of course. We want you to write drabbles. On subjects of your choice. As many as you'd like. And you submit them to us.

Here's how it works:

:bulletred: You write a drabble, aka a short prose piece of exactly 100 words.
:bulletred: You submit it as a deviation in your gallery. Please place it in the Community Projects > Contests > Suture Drabble Contest category. Scrap won't do. Obviously, this is something we'd like you to put your weight behind.
:bulletred: Be sure to do this by midnight PST on Friday Nov 24. This means you have all of Friday too, just to clarify.

What's in it for me?

Prizes, that's what.

:bulletred: A 3-month sub for the winner
:bulletred: A 1-month sub for the runner-up.

The winning entries will also be featured in the upcoming release of Suture.

When will I know if I won?

We will announce the results of the competition in the aforementioned Suture release.

Points Worth Mentioning
:bulletred: This is not an instant-prose contest. Please feel free to work on your entry.
:bulletred: You can enter more than once, but please be judicious. Every frivolous entry will undermine your next one, which may be the real McCoy.
:bulletred: If you are a poet, write a drabble (or five) anyway. Your expertise with economy of words should serve you well.

I have heard of these drabble things. Shall be writing, I think.

and incidentally I wonder if I'm funny. I was thinking of knitting in a little satire, a little bit of "look at you, you're a shameful waste of irony". (Thoughts are important.)

Sounds like fun :)

I thought that some of the metaphysical imagery was really particularly effective. Interesting rhythmic devices too, which seemed to counterpoint the surrealism of the underlying metaphor of the humanity of the poet's compassionate soul...

Ah, great. I love very short prose. I once won the second prize in a similar Finnish contest - though 100 words is a bit more in Finnish. I'll definitely try to participate.
~sumants:iconsumants: Nov 10, 2006, 8:15:16 AM
Yes, the Wikipedia link up in the article gives an example of how two Finnish words translate to nine in English. Much like the Japanese and English haiku, don't you think?

Great idea, will you you be announcing the winners in the news?

Also, I'd be happy to contribute another one month to the sub for the first prize so it's 4months. :aww:
