I got John Legend's newest album, 'Once Again', today. "So what?" you may ask. Well, it's a great album. It's just one of those albums where you can sit back and relax, sixty minutes long. And when you're done listening, you feel happy and start to listen to your personal favourites. Hell, my mom even likes it!
Track list + information
01. Save Room
Track length: 3:52
John Legend opens with his hit single 'Save Room'. It really gets you into the relaxed mood, but it's not a loungy song. His voice raises a bit sometimes, which keeps you interested.
---
02. Heaven
Track length: 3:47
This song reminded me of 'Number One' (featuring Kanye West) in the beginning, with a gospelly intro. The beat behind it keeps this feeling, which is great for the variety. I'm less fond of this song, but it still is a good song.
---
03. Stereo
Track length: 4:19
Really an active song, in case you drifted off while listening to 'Save Room'. Active beat, and his voice doesn't make you feel like drifting off. It's great for the variety on this album, and one of my personal favourites.
---
04. Show Me
Track length: 5:10
A song to listen to laid back again. This song shows his vocal capability and the beat's different from the rest, which makes it even more attractive to the ear.
---
05. Each Day Gets Better
Track length: 4:01
Each Track Gets Better, you mean! This isn't comparable to the other songs you've heard so far on this album, which makes the album better after every second. Background vocals gave the finishing touch to this song.
---
06. P.D.A. (We Just Don't Care)
Track length: 4:51
Opening with the piano was an interesting, yet great choice. Adding a beat to it after a few seconds, and still having the sound of the piano through it, was another genious decision. It's one of the faster songs on the album, and one of my personal favourites.
---
07. Slow Dance
Track length: 4:53
It's just one of those tracks to listen to with a cup of tea, and relax. Drift away to the beat and John Legend's beautiful voice, and try not to fall asleep. It varies from the other songs through the vocals, once again.
---
08. Again
Track length: 5:20
One of the better albums on the album. It reminded me of 'Ordinary People' in a way. The piano as dominating musical instrument was a good choice, although I didn't like like the brushes on the hi-hat, but he makes it all up with his voice. Varying with tone was a great choice, which touched me a bit.
---
09. Maxine
Track length: 4:39
Once again it varies from all of the other songs. His voice and the piano are faster than most of the songs so far, and it's place, right behind 'Again', was a smart choice because it simply keeps you interested. I see this song as a break inbetween the first stint of John Legend and the second. I went to the kitchen to get some more tea when I heard this song.
---
10. Where Did My Baby Go?
Track Length: 5:17
Piano and vocals are once again perfectly combined, and this song shows his vocal capabilities once again. It's a breath of fresh air after 'Again' and 'Maxine', because his voice is raised a bit more. One of my personal favourites.
---
11. Maxine's Interlude
Track Length: 2:00
This song's the shortest track on the album. It makes you realise the album's coming to an end, and I quickly sipped on my tea. There's not much to say about this song though because it's mostly background vocals combined with John Legend's voice.
---
12. Another Again
Track length: 4:01
Another breath of fresh air. Vocals mixed with instruments are another beautiful and interesting combination. It's a great track to have at the end because of that. One of my recommendations from this album.
---
13. Coming Home
Track length: 5:22
My personal favourite on this album. As soon as this track opens, you realise this is the last track. The last five minutes and twenty-two seconds of John Legend's new album. It's a quiet track, with the piano as dominating instrument once again. His vocals really underline the fact that the track's coming to an end. I started to imagine credits rolling by. A great track to close a great album with, and I really hope he releases this as a single.
---
Verdict
I'm glad I stumbled on the commercial for John Legend's new album 'Once Again'. If I didn't, boy I would've missed out! There's more variety on this album than on his previous one, 'Get Lifted'. I enjoyed listening to it from the beginning to the end, and the variety really keeps you interested.
Final score: 9.5/10
