Interview Update: RA909

~slaughteruk:iconslaughteruk: reports, November 13, 2006
First I would Like to thank you for taking the time to participate in our interview.

no worries, thanks for the interview, dig the site.

When did you first get into design, and what in-courage or made you start?

I've been drawing since I was maybe 8, i used to watch alot of Ghostbusters and Ninja Turtles cartoons and wanted to draw them everywhere..and then later down the line I kinda got into abit of graffiti, but that sorta stopped once I got caught up lol. I got into design back in late 2003, that's when I started school. At first I really just wanted to make short-films and animations because at the time I was filming skatevideos, corny ass horror skits and making cheap flyers for a local skateshop. I later got tired of trying to make videos and got real interested in designing, so I switched courses to graphic design.

How do you get your inspiration?

Alot of music mostly. well not just music I guess I get inspiration from all the usual places: tv, movies, life and from other artist's / designer's works. Oh yea and sometimes I gain some inspiration from this very obese fat couple, Linda and Tebore... they always linger in my kitchen after 3am with laptops and a pompadour hair cut. They're always browsing Myspace too.. hmm wonder why, but yea they're a total geniuses . Real inspiring....

Do you have any formal training?

Sure thing I went to school for design and got all my credentials, but feels more like I taught myself all these stuff by just staying up all night screwing around on the internet while tinkering with Photoshop and Illustrator.

Do you offer any of your work for sale?

Yeah I sell prints of my recent work on my website and from time to time I sell a few shirts, which I also designed and screen printed by myself.

What do you hope that the viewer gets out of your work?

Pretty much just to enjoy it like eye candy. The stuff I draw and make is usually pointless, morbid and confusing but that's how I wanted it and I hope they can enjoy it that way and maybe want more.

What time of day do you usually design?

Haha jeeze...late late night. Never before noonish, unless I'm still awake from the night / day before and/ or being paid.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years, will you still be designing?

Five years eh. Hopefully a very happy person doing anything I want and haha with anyone I want. But yes I love designing and illustrating so yea I'll still be doing this just hopefully while owning my own private studio and/ or least working for a real good one.

What is your occupation, do you do design for a living, or do you design as a hobby?

Right now I'm doing alot of freelance design / illustration work and so far that's going nice enough to not need any other kind of jobs. But design is also a fun lil hobby for me so even if for some horrible god-awful reason it doesn't work out as a living, i'll still do it for kicks.

How do you first start a design?

Get very smashed, pass out, then wake up..and there's something there. I suspect fairies with tube-socks take control of my fingers while I'm out.
Kidding. My artwork sometimes is random and inspired by music or something else cool I saw in the day. I sometimes do plan out my work with sketches..then go back and refine it.

Roughly how long do you spend on each of your designs?

Once I start something I usually would like to finish it up while I'm still into it. Most of my artworks made in a couple of hours. Unless it's some bigger design project, then I take my time usually a couple days or by the deadline and get shit just right.

And..what’s your opinion bout the development of graphic design in the world? There’re lots of designers out now,but do you think this is something prestigious? Something that separates yourself from the others,or its just something that is modern now?

I dunno there's alot of great designers and different levels of graphic design, some classy, some crummy... like a graphic design food chain lol. I don't think I'm anything too important on it, but I am trying to stick out and move up the food chain.

Thank you for taking this interview, we want to see more excellent work coming & lots of success in your future intentions! Is there anything you wanna say to the readers?

Thanks alot for taking the time to read this and I hope it makes some sense to you. And best of luck to everyone trying to get by in design or illustration, just stay creative and don't sleep at night.
