Welcome to the weekly Help Desk news. In these weekly updates we will attempt to bring you the most up to date information, as well as provide some helpful hints for super duper deviantART fun.
Help Desk Holiday Closure Dates
In addition to the
normal closure times for the Help Desk, the Help Desk will be closed next Thursday (November 23rd) for the Thanksgiving Holiday and will reopen Sunday at 8pm GMT as per usual. No weekly update will be posted next Thursday as well, due to the closure.
You may still submit tickets during this time and they will be answered in the order that they are received when we return.
If you have critical matter needing immediate attention (and not policy related), please email
help@deviantart.com.
You can also visit
#help on the dAMN messaging network to receive live help 24/7.
Reminder
Before we get started this week we would like to remind users of a request still standing.
"In May we announced there was some data loss of down loadable files only, uploaded between 2004 and 2005. Backups have been loaded and before they can be run developers are asking for your help in fixing this issue. In order to help aide them in this request this is what we need from you: We need you to gather links to any pieces, including your own, which are affected by this issue.
Once gathered please send these links to the Help Desk under the contact category "Gallery Section Addition".
Once the Help Desk Team has gathered enough links from users, developers will have the information that is needed to identify the backups required to repair these files to their original working order.
(Please note: This issue should not be confused with other gallery issues present at this time.)"
Hexe's Corner
In regards to last weeks responses on my request for a FAQ update article, I am happy to announce this will be put in place and rolled out on a monthly basis. Don't worry the minor FAQ updates will also remain in these articles as well.
In this weeks news - Some users, mainly Tutorial or Comic Artists have voiced concerns in regards to uploading a
custom preview image with your works in the new submission process, stating that it can no longer be done. This is correct, however this was done for a few technical reasons and mainly due to abuse where other users uploaded previews with text consisting of "Click Me For Fullview", or users who uploaded porn under previews.
Now we realize this is causing quite a stir and wish to comply with your requests, however we are unsure how big of a demand this feature is. So what we're asking from you now is to vote
[here] if you would like to see this option added. If added obviously some small policies will need to be reworked, but they will be minor.
Please note, this does not affect users who submit flash pieces or lit works or who upload previews to accompany .zip or .gif files, this only affects those who added custom reviews, so only those affected should vote.
Ewm's Corner
This week I would like to remind everyone about favourited scraps. With the change in how the favorite page is organized, we realize that many users may not realize that favourites in the scraps category will not show up along side of normal favourites.
The scrapped favourite section is relatively similar to how scraps are displayed in a user's gallery, as they are kept separate from the main gallery. In order to access your favourited scraps you will need go to your favourite page by clicking on the "Browse Favourites" link below the display of your favourites on your user page. Then you need to click on the category button, which is located between your username and the favourited thumbnails. Once you click on the categories button, you will need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the list to click on "Scraps".
Please keep in mind there is currently an issue concerning Firefox users with the category button. If you are using Firefox you can bypass this issue by clicking the top right or left corner of the category button.
Bug Corner
The top issues being reported this week are...
Gallery Issues -
Gallery Issues are still pending a fix. Additionally while we do not have an ETA on when this will exactly be fixed, we can say that this issue will be fixed only when a solid fix is found and apologize for how long it is taking.
AOL Issues - AOL 9.0 users are reporting that features dependent on javascript are failing. (
Status: This issue is being investigated and we should have some light soon.)
Hidden Comment Issues - Users are reporting issues with comment hiding, either they read blank when trying to view them or they remain un-hidden when logged out. (
Status: This issue has been put on the bug listing for review and should be fixed soon.)
Favourites' Counter Glitch - We have been receiving reports of favourite counters being way off, sometimes reporting favourite counts in the millions or hundreds of thousands and sometimes minus millions of favourites.
If you're affected by this issue, please contact the Help Desk with a url to the piece so the count can be fixed.
Full View Counter Issues - Users are reporting that the full view counters on their deviations have stopped counting. To
refresh why this is..
"Full view counts will most likely be removed entirely in place of a statistic on your main page that gives a total viewing of your gallery as opposed to just your main page." (
Status: This change is still pending.)
Firefox Layering Issues - Firefox users are reporting that when visiting the Favourites page of a user that the Category button cannot be clicked on. (
Status: This issue is being looked into.)
In the meantime we ask users to workaround this issue by clicking on the upper right or left hand corner of the Categories button to display the menu.
Fixed
Old Style Fav Issues - If you clicked on the add to favourites link before the page fully loaded you were then taken to a new page with the old style layout telling you the fav has been added, the same applies if you then go back and remove the fav before the page fully loads. (
Status: FIXED)

I, for one, like that the previews were taken off.
People use them when they aren't needed and it's really annoying when the deviation hidden under the thumbnail is too big to view, but the thumbnail doesn't show the image.
Not to mention the abuse, I have found stolen artwork hidden under thumbnails too.
I think the good outweighs a few complaints and I'm sure there will be a happy medium when it's all settled.

Anyways, great update and happy early Thanksgiving!

You all should have left the preview image alone. It is one thing to add things without the community's knowledge, but have you not learned yet that taking things AWAY is never a good thing and is rarely received well?
I fail to see why everyone is being punished for the actions of a small minority.
Aside from that, great article and Happy Thanksgiving.

Quite a few, in fact, and that I rarely use thumbnails for tutorials.
You'll note I said "I'm sure there will be a happy medium when it's all settled."
I stick by the fact that the good outweighs the complaints with this decision. You have to full view tutorials to read them anyway, it doesn't really make a difference whether it's a preview image or a smaller version of the actual file.
I wouldn't even have any objections if they wanted me to remove the previews on the 2 tutorials I used them on before they took them off. I only put them on there for the fun of it.
