Oh how your bubble's gonna burst, when you meet another nurse, she'll be drivin in a hearse
While in some cases, I think the copyright thing is being taken too far, it's still not okay to break the law because it's convenient. Many pho photographers now are getting around this issue by offering with their photo package a CD with the photos that can be e-mailed to friends and family. These photos are small and designed to be viewed on the web, so they aren't of print quality. When/if I ever get into more serious photgraphy, I'll probably be doing this, because most of the people guilty of making cheap copies of their pro portraits are only doing it because they're being sent to relatives who will probably look at the photo, then toss it, and it isn't worth spending so much on a nice photos that'll just be tossed.

For those people who are looking to save some money, try just sending an email to the photographer, or giving them a call and asking if it's okay to make copies of the pictures. For many portrait studios, it's more of ahassle than it's worth to them to try to find your photos in their system for reprints, so they'll glady allow copies to be made. Portrait studios like JC Penny, Sears, and Lifetouch even have a stock "release form" that they can fill out for a customer who wants to make inexpensive reprints at a local lab. The photographer isn't guarenteed to agree with this, but for those on a tight budget, it doesn't hurt to ask.
