Plz Account Purge II: The Revenge

`object2bdestroyd:iconobject2bdestroyd: reports, November 21, 2006
So, a second plzaccount purge deviantART, I guess that was a good idea, seeing as there is no real reason for the things except to be funny But maybe, just maybe, there are better things you (and the C&E staff) could be doing with your time.

Now I am no supporter of the plz accounts, but what I do support is doing whatever action has no real rule against it. Whatever that action might be.

Many companies that have a user base that pays for a service has issues like this. The company gives an inch, the consumers take a mile, its not unheard of. But how the company reacts to that is what defines it.

Back when I was still a staff member at deviantART I suggested several times that if you wanted plz accounts to stop, you must make it so people cannot use them, period. Where are the accounts used? Occasionally dAmn, but their intended realm is the forums. I remember way back into dA history when users could put user icons in their signatures, anyone else remember that? But that was a huge cause of spam, and a lot of what dA likes to call icon mossiacs. So dA pulled a really smart move and disabled every deviants ability to put working icons of user in their signatures, problem solved.

But like I said, this was years ago, and deviantART won't do the smart thing again. Instead they enforce the rules where they see fit. Kill one account but not another, even though it is breaking the exact same rule. Example: Icon mossiacs, anyone who has a namby pamby love icon that links to their significant other should be permabanned under these rules, but the rules are not evenly enforced, just losely interpreted and randomly enforced. I suggest the following:

1. Disallow the posting of user icons in every forum except maybe the thumbshare forum.

2. Put something in the TOS specifically about the creation of accounts for the sole purpose of being an image to use in the various channels of dA.

I mean number one is just a good idea all around. Icons just make it easier to call out a deviant, which is against dA's own policy, it's almost a no-brainer to have that ability removed and I know it can be. Number two will make it so no one can question the judgement of anyone involved. If you want something to not happen make a rule about it that describes the exact action you do not want to happen, and then enforce that rule.

I think it's high time for some progression here. I want dA and the forums to be a better place and this is how I see it happening. If you do not follow my advice, chances are all the plz accounts you purged will have new account names that you will have deal with.

Instead of wasting time with this bullshit, release the party system I was promised over 3 years ago. That would be nice.

I think the way it has been handled is not what is necessary in these cases. Admin haven't treated this in a fair manner in that they have purged some accounts, not others. What strikes me as being worst about the handling of the situation, is the manner in which it was done. More than one of the accounts purged was not just a pretty picture, there were people who worked on them not as "art" accounts per se, but as group accounts to showcase works themed upon that image. Now I myself am guilty of using these oversized emoticons from time to time, and do enjoy their presence. I agree however, that if they want to remove these accounts from the forums, they should remove the ability for one to post avatars in the forums, not purge accounts.

The purging of accounts will just encourage people even more.

 I don't see any real reason to dis-allow plz accounts, but on the other hand I can't really think of any real use for the icon links in the forums either. If the staff really object to the plzs for whatever reason it'd make more sense for them to make specific mention of them in the rules somewhere as well.

I'm not terribly bothered by the "plz" accounts. I think the staff should busy themselves going after the more important policy violations.

It is kinda silly that posting an icon in your journal linking to your significant other is a bannable offense here. I was never aware of it, for that matter.

There appears to be nothing in the TOS about accounts whose avatar's main purpose to serve as extra emoticons.

i actually "liked" plz accounts, because they where pretty interesting to look at.

but now i think there are too much of them around, i mean if the accounts where like "ohnoes" one, than it would be cool, other than that i think they just take up account space.

also, getting rid of the "icon posting" in the fourms would kill the humor, but seems like a good idea.
:iconfeepitsrule:
I agree, it was kind of pointless. That time spent banning the plzs could've been spent doing something actually important. :omfg:

I know that. I meant if they don't want them to be used they should put something in there about it. Maybe I worded that badly.
