Money in art : Manga

~pandracchio:iconpandracchio: reports, November 21, 2006
A couple days ago VampiresPromise and me started talking about an interesting issue, very common in the world of Arts:

Manga (the word means "casual-drawing") has become one of the biggest money industry in art forms.
It's weird how art-world goes: usually artists want to sell their work, so they can live with art, when they get money they can improve their life and be really motivated, but after a while usually their jobs give them restrictions and deadlines, so art is not coming from the will and inspiration of the artist anymore, but from the money. So money in this case rules the artist and ruins his/her art. It happens in many cases.
Manga is one of them, I believe there is always something to learn from great works or artistic movements, Expressionism, Cubism, Pop Art, but there is absolutely to take in consideration how much the MONEY factor took place in them.

People react to things they see, and their reactions are always considered by commercial issues. Manga was born with good intention, to create a loose and jamming style and to be more focused on stories and characters. But manga-adoration made it a commercial artform, creating tons and tons of material who can be considered 'VERY POOR OF ELEMENTS' as aiming only to make money out of it.

Overall I consider there is an advantage on this commercial mechanism, because it gives job to many artists who wants to live their life making what they love the most: drawing.

What is your thought about it?

Manga means whimsical or irresponsible art... And it was 'born' when Hokusai Katsuhika published 'Hokusai Manga'. It just so happened to become an artform from there, originally pairing traditional forms of Chinese and Japanese are with this new, story-telling style. Personally, that's why I like to do it. Because done right, it's an artorm over 200 years old that still basically remains intact and alive.

I very much agree with the lack of quality in manga made for the sheer purpose of making money, and it gives a bad name to the art. Quite unfortunate... I'd like to make a living off of this, some day, because I want to be able to make money doing something I love doing.

thanks for your comment and for the cool historycal points!
I didn't know that as I'm not into manga. I always like to read and listen to artistic stuff I don't know.
:)

Well, I'm not the type who got into Japan because of anime. Rather, it was the other way around. I really like japanese and Chinese culture as a kid, and I loved to draw... So it led to liking to draw that. And I bothered to learn the history of it because I had found it interesting in the first place, not... 'oo, I'm going to try to emulate the less finer points of manga' like I've seen a lot of folks do. And that's where it gets everyone just wanting to make there own...

wow, cool I've always wanted to go to japan...it seems so different. Is it true that it's so expensive?
:iconfangyuzhe:
The standard of living is higher, but it's more expensive to live there, as far as I know.

oh ok, thank you, I guess I have to go there at least once in my life..I love to travel :)
:iconvampirespromise:
It happens in all, but the manga and anime stuff is what I see it in the most. All I see anymore is the same thing being reproduced. And all it does is make money for those of whom want it. It has no character, nothing at all that can point that person out in any form. Yes there are good manga and anime that have good story lines. But honestly there seems to be nothing else to it. As for other art forms yes we do see it, but not as large scale as we do there in those two. In other forms like dark and abstract it happened similarly but not on such a great scale

In the screams of many, not one voice is heard over all the others except silence.
:iconegen-mugen:
I'd say manga is manga and that's it. It's just another way of drawing things than they are in the real world, which makes it interesting to me.
Drawing real things is easier in a way, because you draw from what you see; in case of manga your style matters a lot more.
The detailing is usually reduced comparing to the real art, but... those manga-stories and anime, which are the most of what people call manga, aren't art. If you look at works of professional artists, who draw both real and manga (Anry, for example) you'll see that the detailing doesn't differ that much. Some people'd say about the face, but that's kinda lie. The face overall is simplier, but the eyes need a lot more detailing, so they're more or less even. The rest is to whether you like more anime or real world.
