It's a question I hear repeated again and again, and as a 2D animation student, it's scary to hear. When I finish my degree in two 18 months time, will I actually be able to find a job, make a living, or just be able to animate in general?
CG has become such a popular tool of animation that it has lost any charm or quality in those films. Since the Incredibles, has anything in CG animation been any good? Memorable? I mean story, great visuals and well as stunning animation. How many CG films have been produced this year alone? Something like 14!!! So have a think, tell me what good has come since Incredibles? I'll gladly argue and say nothing.
And CG sequels. Where is the artform? CG animation is just a commercial tool now to pull in easy money from kids. The market is too saturated now with CG animation, people are getting sick of it. Since 2003 the amount of CG animated films has risen, and the trends looks to continue aswell next year.
This isnt a rant saying CG animation is bad. I like cartoons and animation. But when rubbish is thrown down our throats so much, especially since 2D is being dismissed as dead, then that annoys me.
But what about flash animation? 2D is alive in flash animation, especially all over the internet. - Wrong.
I dont wanna burst peoples bubbles here, but alot of flash animation on the internet, including deviantArt, is quite frankly a very poor excuse of animation. You may find a gem from time to time, something that is actually animated, but the majority of stuff is barely even keyramed, its all jerky, no smooth motion, no idea of timing, no control of mass and volume, no slow ins, slow outs. These people are not animators, they are people with a computer program.
2D is alive in television, but to what cause? All western animation is shipped over to the east where they can animate for next to nothing, because at the end of the day, it all comes down to money. The only 2D animation that seems to get made now is independant films, and although as great as they are, it is just not mainstream anymore with all the filmmakers backing out.
Animation is a funny world, profession. 3D animation was proclaimed dead around 1996, and now it thriving, all over UK television shows and now into mainstream films with more to come. With so much CG animation, people will be yearning for something different, and with 3D rising, this will draw people in.
And dont forget John Lasseter being more or less creative chief of disney now, and he really wants to push more 2D film productions, being a 2D animator originally himself. DId you know all the animators on the Incredibles had never animated on a computer before, but were all 2D animators? Well, we have Rapunzel coming out soon, and Brad Bird desperate to get a 2D film running to get that different look out there. So I ask the question again, is 2D animation dead?
Looking towards my future, I have to be optimistic and say no, its not. I just hope I am not wrong.
Devious Comments
We know that, clearly, there will always be the need for both, but I suppose the exact markets in which each one is more popular will change from time to time.
Thanks alot for reading this though. I know it may seem like a rant, but as an animator, and speaking for students aswell in my class, this is how we feel. Us 2D animators will be a dying breed.

Talk about putting pressure. Basically be the next walt disney or you're screwed. lol
Its a subject that comes up often. Alot of us in uni have discussed maybe doing our own thing, making an animation that we would like and try pitching it. But we need experience in industry, money....sigh...I am so screwed.
