Myspace or deviantART

~eduardofrench:iconeduardofrench: reports, December 13, 2006
From quite some time, the photography section, specially the people and portraits have been invaded by shots that are best suited for places like hi5, myspace and the alikes, shots that aren't related to art at all, the emotive and fashion galleries are the ones that are being the most affected by this trend.

This said I am not talking about the photos taken by newcomers in photography, since you can still find between all the rubbish myspace-alike photos that really have artistic merit, people who are really doing their best to do good artistic photographies, I am talking about people holding cameras to take photos of a circle made with the legs and shoes of her an her friends, people making the classic myspace shot arm extended camera set to wide angle showing bloated faces, flash overexposure and doing silly faces and putting them into the fashion gallery... I haven't found yet any fashion magazine that has this kinds of photos... because that is not fashion or a photo with any artistic merit, it is a SNAPSHOT, a shot best suited for their SCRAPS or make-online-friends sites.

deviantART as the name implies it is a site dedicated to ART, yet the place is being overrun by this kind of trend that has NOTHING to do with art...everything has a place, artistic photography belongs to DA. Family, friends SNAPSHOTS belong to make-friends-online sites.

I really want to Invite the administrators of the site to take this issue seriously, and the general population who is really taking seriously the word ART in deviantART to demand the site to be focused to ART related material.

Sadly true, lots of people are complaining about it, and I'm the first to do so.

But art is not defined by the viewer, it's defined by the artist. If they make a crappy webcam shot of a rotten turd, they can call it art, and it will therefore be art :/

BTW, don't use the news system for such complaints, rather use your journal or the forum
FAQ #687: What is news and what is not news?
:iconduhcoolies:
If this was well worded and didnt sound as if it was a rant, it could have been news. But sadly it looks more like a rant. The news section isnt the place for this. Try the suggestions forum.

I comment you for commenting on a growing issue on this site. We here tread on a touchy subject though, because to some extent this is a rather subjective topic. I struggle to think of a way to implement some sort of ruling that would eliminate or at least reduce the amount of snapshots that we have on here. I mean, some people would get annoyed with a lot of other forms of "art", so as you can see we hit upon a touchy subject. My suggestion is that if the scraps section is seemingly to degrading to those that are needing to use it, maybe we should implement a snapshots type section with the same intent as the scraps section. Or bring the two together in a scraps and snapshots section. This blatant naming may help in this area. That is my two cents though...
:iconbadfurday:
That would save the photography section, but it would also definitely transform DA into DeviantMySpace :/
:iconeduardofrench:
It could be but the guidelines for the submission define in which category the photos should be submited, this said it is on of the filters to avoid this problem, but people simply submit whatever they want without taking in count what the submission guidelines in each section of the photography section say.

May I ask if you have seen that this is and editorial and it is the editorial section?

In case you don't know what editorial is and to reply to your FAQ link
[link]

It is truly annoying that you copy and paste the link WITHOUT even looking that this is an editorial.. for God's sake!

Next time check the section and tell me later if you know the difference between NEWS and EDITORIAL

:iconbadfurday:
Well, of course they submit where they can, because they can't find the "Crappy webcam shot" gallery that is... -_-

Yeah, I know what is an editorial, but yours is not as it's rather written as a rant.
But I must admit, the same article, better written, would definitely be a newsworthy article ^^
:iconeduardofrench:
In case you haven't noticed it is already happening

:iconeduardofrench:
.... Yeah that is the main problem. the Scrap section is defined for casual and non art related snapshots.

I won't talk about the rant or no rant thing, but I would appreciate that next time before making the copy and paste from the faq, you take the time to see if it is news or it is an editorial. with any user of the page.
