:pointr:Ongoing Projects: fotoFriday

Under the guidance of our very own `youthculture the *fotoFRIDAY project continues. Every week a new issues is posting, which you can read about on their page or in the Literature News Section regularly.

Right now they are having their Holiday Special, so make sure to and give it a try, and a look at all the entries at the end of the week.

Happy Friday.

:pointr:Forum Threads

The forums are usually an interesting place to interact with old and new writers around the community. Here are some of the more active threads in the last few weeks:

you people are boring. by =positivitize

Which writer would you most like to emulate? by *GeneratingHype

anal-oh-geez! by ~warblytwitflizz

:pointr:Submission Process

Earlier in the month the new Submission system was released to the dA public. This new process eliminates the need go through multiple pages and lists of categories, instead making it all on one easy and quick submission form. For literature, it does mean a few noticeable changes, but should give writers more freedom in how they prepare their work.

There are still a few bugs here and there, but we are making sure that any problems are addressed as quickly as possible. You can submit a +helpdesk ticket if required.

One of the major issues we are hearing about is the previews, which states that one is required for submission. This is misleading, and will be changed, because previews are not required to submit literature right now.

For more information please see FAQ #286: How do I submit Literature?

:pointr:Literature Workshop Forums

For a long time now, we've had a few threads in the Literature Forums that allow people to post their poetry and prose to be workshopped by other artists. This was meant to be a temporary fill for an eventual forum that would house all the workshops for literature. Now, we have that forum.

The Literature Workshop Forum will allow writers to post a thread with their work, and others can simply post their thoughts and critiques. Make sure to read to read the guidelines for posting before creating a thread.

You can also find the forum by click on the Forum button on the top of the page and using the Categories menu. All Galleries -> Literature Workshop Forum will lead you right to where you need to go.

We will be adjusting the rules and guidelines over the coming weeks, and if you'd like to give some input into that, please be sure to drop a note to either myself or ^imperfect and we will do our best to help you out.

:pointr:Digital to Physical

With all the updates coming to the prints system, there are a lot of people within the literature community that have been wondering exactly what this will do for us. Well, if you haven't already heard, there are developments underway specifically for literature, allowing for on-demand printing. This is all part of the Prints II initiative, and we should have more concrete news for you very soon. Stay tuned.

:pointr:Did You Know?

This feature is devoted to some things about dA and the literature community that you may or may not know. Things we've been asked and answered, and thought we'd share with everyone.

Did you know that the "This user is no longer a member of deviantART" pages can indicate not only a banned user, but someone who has asked for their account to be closed, as well?

Did you know that if you submit an idea or a project to any of the Gallery Directors looking for some support, we will very often offer up subscriptions and other help as needed?

:pointr:Festive DD Suggestions

Now that the holidays are on their way, we would like to encourage that people look for, dig up and submit some suggestions for DDs that fit inline with the season. Litmas activities aside, it's nice to see some Daily Deviations that suit the spirit, and if you've got something you see that really fits well, we'd love to see it, too.

:pointr:EldritchCabal December Results and New Beginnings

Interested in writing, but having trouble gathering inspiration? Been wanting to pool your abilities with a group of other writers to create something greater than the sum of its products? For those who haven't heard, *EldritchCabal is that and more.

A collaborative project started earlier last month by *salshep, *Adeimantus and =intangebility, it serves to allow writers a world to add and take from, to practice and proof their writing abilities.

Their flagship competition this December has the results now posted and here are the winners as announced in that article.

Poetry: The Wild Hunt by *ladyofx

Prose: Trolls by *rober2

Art: Paroxysm by *larkin-art

Also, check out the results article and their journal for more details on the winners and their January competition.

Entries for that start on the first of the new year, so get cracking. Get writing.

today. by ~childoftheuniverse is a satirical account of an everyday occurrence.

Poetry featured on 09th Nov 2006 by ^PoeticWar and suggested by *Amalgamadora

++

Don't be put off by the innocent introduction. The character in Monologue vI is cold and relentless, haranguing the reader for their judgement while simultaneously letting her own weaknesses emerge. As well as exhibiting remarkable character development, ~fauxgravity's piece would give any actor some seriously interesting material to work with.

Prose featured on 10th Nov 2006 by ^adrift

Poetry featured on 17th Nov 2006 by ^PoeticWar

++

Smouldering Graffiti Sleep by ~dentalplan is Paul Celan-esque, spare, rich, dreamscape stuff with a particularly striking opening stanza where the roles of fire and shadow are playfully reversed.

Poetry featured on 20th Nov 2006 by ^imperfect and suggested by *jack-cade

++

Thunderhead by ~ShadowedAcolyte is highly readable, engaging and nicely written.

Poetry featured on 21st Nov 2006 by ^PoeticWar

The Dress She Wears by ~sculptorchic is a poem like a dress with a silky flow, weaved with powerful narrative and imagery, seamed into a delicate metre.

Poetry featured on 22nd Nov 2006 by ^imperfect and suggested by `diamondie

++

Refugee's Photo by ~Machilin. This non-traditional tanka, written originally in Japanese and translated perfectly into English by the author, is a simple but powerful statement about the human condition. With just a few simple words, the poem evokes a complete image, strong with emotion.

Poetry featured on 23rd Nov 2006 by ^PoeticWar and suggested by =MSJames

++

Small towns all have their own idiosyncracies--that odd neighbor down the way, the grandmothers with their golden age wisdom--even if you live in the middle of Nowhere by ~renaissance1912. Give this poem an attentive read, and then do it again; this one will stick with you for a while.

Poetry featured on 24th Nov 2006 by ^imperfect and suggested by =caveatLECTOR

g-rain evident-s by ~kountrklchr captures a dormant, magnificent love that takes so many shapes, so many forms, and yet flows into each and every one of us.

Poetry featured on 25th Nov 2006 by ^PoeticWar and suggested by ~justb

Waste by ~MacDoherty is poignant and blackly funny, and will linger with you for a long time.

Prose featured on 26th Nov 2006 by ^imperfect and Suggested by ~LazyLinePainterJohn

The Sparrows of Holly Lane by ~StoneAnnexCipher is a striking bit of whimsy. Next time you spot a sparrow, you might find yourself regarding it a bit more cautiously.

Poetry featured on 27th Nov 2006 by ^PoeticWar

ride on the underground by ~the-beastie captures the ghastly clostrophobia of the underground.

Poetry featured on 28th Nov 2006 by ^imperfect and suggested by *AbCat

The Messenger by *AbCat, a poem from the In the End competition, draws on a gorgeous palette of imagery and description for its purposes, coupled with an innovative structure.

Poetry featured on 29th Nov 2006 by ^PoeticWar

The Brick is a high-maintenance hotel with a magnificent garden of steel and silver steam-powered plants - and a mystery or two. An exercise in 'steampunk' for a Fantasy Writers United competition in June this year, The Brick well deserved the Second Prize, and =yatsu will keep you asking questions right up until the end.

Prose featured on 30th Nov 2006 by ^adrift and suggested by =Thriss

Sex and paperbacks--not an uncommon juxtaposition for a true bookophile. and this is where by *emothemurdok provides a sensual image along with clever enjambment and delectable sonics.

Poetry featured on 30th Nov 2006 by ^imperfect and suggested by =caveatLECTOR

++

Don't let the couple of extra mouse-clicks to the PDF put you off reading this play the whole way through - I would pay to see this put on stage. Similarly, don't let your own trials and tribulations in jobseeking get in the way of thoroughly enjoying Help Wanted: A Comedy... for what it is - a funny, cathartic, and much-needed jab at the job market. Despite showing such obvious contempt for the hypocrisies and idiosyncrasies of the recruitment world, there is also an undertone of quiet desperation in this play, and anyone remotely familiar with the frustrations of career jobseeking will have no trouble sympathising with ~ninja-librarian's characters.

Prose featured on 2nd Dec 2006 by :deadrift: and suggested by =Thriss

++

Meet My Girl by ~suckerforsunrises. She's not quite what she seems.

Poetry featured on 3rd Dec 2006 by ^imperfect

++

Epitaph for a Dolphin by =positivitize is a beautiful, sad story about friendship, love, and growing up expressed through vivid imagery and deep metaphor.

Poetry featured on 5th Dec 2006 by ^imperfect and suggested by ~zeratul547

++

Science fiction doesn't have to focus heavily on technology in order to develop new ideas or contain a powerful message. ~Holy-Mecha's strengths are excellent narrative and dialogue coupled with characters so human you'd almost forget one of them was a robot. As well as being a compelling and moving story, The Bird has an undertone of authenticity that is so often missing from the genre.

Prose featured on 9th Dec 2006 by ^adrift and suggested by `diamondie

++

My da tells me he has a way to ward off the Coughs. There's a war on, a virus spreading, and a father and daughter gripping tightly to a tiny scrap of hope. A Blossom by =Mleeph is literary sci-fi well worth coming back to.
