Alright, I really suggest that you read the following so that you understand everything later on. Capeesh?
...Alright, so being New Year's Eve & everything, I essentially wanted to end the year with a bang. A bit of a big bang. So while I was on vacation, a thought popped into my head...An idea...What if this time, for a special edition of my Mini-DDs, I was to feature
the 50 best Deviations of 2006??
...Thought that may grab your attention.
Well, first I guess I should mention that I'm not fully behind this. Seeing as how I thought I'd be passed out after several combinations of champagne & Pepsi by this point, I typed this all up earlier today, & I also let my little buddy ~
Fefcaine handle the festivities this time around, including letting him use my account to post everything. I put my whole trust in him that he'll pull this off perfectly. Also, I like to eat stinky garbage.
(Fefcaine: Tee-hee-hee! XD)
Anyhow, a lot of work went into making this list...For one, I decided to browse
all 365 days worth of premium artwork, making sure I got the best...& in order to keep my sanity intact while choosing what to feature, I decided to limit the selections to only those with 75 favorites or more. Say that it's a bit shallow if you will, but only the community's best could rack up that much acclaim (well, except for that lousy Kirby/Link pic that landed on the front page one day). Besides, can you reallistically expect me to go over practically
every piece of art on this site this year?
Well, it took me a few days, but I narrowed the whole shebang down to around two dozen works of art, & from there, I went with what I thought were the 50 best. Well, actually, I'm letting Fefcaine pick the best from the nominees as well...It's all good, & he's got a f***ing wicked taste in art as well, so here's hoping he does a good job as well!
Naturally, there was a lot of several amazing stuff that I just couldn't fit in, but I still stand by my selections, as they all kept me looking at them over & over throughout the year, going "Holy s***, that's amazing" when I looked at them. The whole list even involves a couple of scraps & more than a few DDs (sort of ironically) to boot.
Got a problem with all of this? Well then, I'd like to see you try & make your own list like this!
...Actually, I really
would like to see anyone try & make a list like this. Hell, I'd actually
pay to see stuff like that (though not much, as I'm on a budget)! Any takers? ^_^
I guess I should actually get moving along here. But first off, I'd like to acknowledge a few honorable mentions. You see, a few pieces were put up here in 2006, but were originally posted before 2006 & re-posted later for various reasons. And after mulling it over for a bit, I decided that it wasn't 100% ethical to include them in the actual list. But since they still kicked ass so much, I'd still like to give them each the actual award & show them off here. So the honorable mentions are:
...Oh yeah, I guess I mentioned an award. Well, here it is! My traditional token of great artwork for special occasions, the Platinum Fefcaine Award!
(Fefcaine: And this time I stuffed it with milk chocolate, white chocolate, dark chocolate, AND threw in several of those crumbly cookie things!!! ^_^)
Wow, am I droning on. So let's just cut straight to the big stuff: The list. In case you're wondering, all the features are sorted chronologically, helping to fit in with the year-long "2006" theme. Plus, can you imagine me trying to rank them all? That'd be too much work...Can you say "brain explosion"?
...Well, that's not to say I don't have #1 in mind. But I don't think I'll be revealing what my #1 of the whole year is...For now. Maybe with the right persuasion, perhaps...?
Alright, enough of that crap. Fefcaine's making his selections, & he's even got his little commentary started,
which you can view here, & I'm starting to feel a buzz coming on, so before I get too tipsy, let's get it on:

Devious Comments
Those drawings are all very nice and... cute, but it is not really the creme de la creme here on dA, if you will excuse me for saying so.

This confuses me. You say that you have featured the 50 best deviations of 2006, and I could see how these could be your opinion, but you did not say it was so I won't take them as this. There is not a very wide range of variety. Mostly digital art with some traditional features sprinkled in. I was hoping to see some literature, stock photography, photography, more traditional. There were so many submissions in 2006 I doubt anyone could make the assumption as to what is the best submissions from this year.
The first few paragraphs said nothing of only featuring anime/manga/cartoon like deviations, let alone only digital pieces. I think most of the paragraphs there were redundant to the article as a whole, and didn't explain much except that you got drunk tonight and had help from a friend. That wasn't very eye catching.. at all. For future reference, I would suggest saying why you featured these for the supposed excellence and why they you considered them the best from 2006. It would have been nice to see a theme to your features here (like Unknown Photos of 2006 for example). I did not see that here. Therefore, I can not support this article. As much as I would like to, I think you were not wise in your decisions for this article.

...You do realize how much I would have to go through in order to cover EVERY category, right? I only had less than a week to pull this off, so I obviously can't fully go into depth here. besides, there's optional commentary from Fefcaine (although since he's a psycho robot, don't expect the best). Also, I stated that these are what I thought were the 50 best.
And maybe I could have mentioned that these were mostly cartoonish. But I don't just stick to one genre. How do I sell something like that? Bill it as the Best Cartoons/Surreal/Psychedelic/Traditional/Anime/Etc. of 2006? Look, I do enjoy practically all genres. But the stuff here is what I believe to be the best.
I could go on, but I quote myself here:
"Got a problem with all of this? Well then, I'd like to see you try & make your own list like this!"
...So what do you have to offer there?

Also, I believe that i stated this early on:

...So? Got any ideas?

I believe that would make it a lot more balanced.

Why did you not say this in the article? I can see what you were saying when you say that it would be difficult to browse every gallery on dA to find the best submissions of dA. This is why I said what I did above. What you think are the best submissions on dA are not always what other people would think. So I ask you to please keep opinionated posts such as this in your journal. This has been said many times before and I don't like to be the one to tell people that you need to post a news post in your journal. Sometimes, though, I will tell the deviant that posted the article because I feel it could have been a great article but they did not go the extra mile to make it something extraordinary. Something we all haven't seen before. Something fresh and something fantastic. I do not get that feeling with this article as you have outlined, and said yourself, only work from the cartoon/digital/traditional gallery. These do not cover the best artwork that is on dA from 2006.
I might be making you say "he doesn't know what he's talking about", but let me just say, if you want to present the public (via the news) with your favourite artwork from 2006 (or any year) please say so in the article. But then it would come down to if this belongs in your journal (your opinion does not always agree with the public at large) or is it a worthy news post. Here, in my honest opinion, I think that this belongs in your journal.. if you're wondering why, it's already been said.

Sorry if you were misled a bit, & I guess I should have made it clearer that this was my opinion, but I've done these features over & over, with my opinions, with no problems or complaints. By now it just seemed obvious that this was my opinion. In fact, any article like this isn't going to be the opinion of the whole site. At the most, it'll be the opinions of a group of people.
In fact, btw, one of the reasons I used stuff with only 75 faves or higher was because I thought it would help represent the majority of the site's favorites more.
Also, once again: I don't see you making the list of DA's Best of 2006. Care to take your best shot? Think you'll get a better response?

Sorry if nothing in Photography blew my mind as much as these 50 this year, but that's the way the ball bounces.
P.S. The "ideas" comment at the end was referring to my comment about making your own list. So if you think what you have is the better solution, why not give that a try yourself?

Besides, the quality is always higher if people select stuff from genres and media they're familiar with. If someone who doesn't know anything about photography goes to select photography just to have some variety the results often aren't so good. And the same goes for literature to an even stronger extent.
The style(s) of art in the article isn't really the stuff that blows me away, I'm more into realism and surrealism myself. But it's a good selection of features and I'm sure many people will find pictures they like through it. I've been thinking of making my own TOP-50 article and maybe I'll do that.
