The Top 20 Filipino Comic Artists in DA 2006

*johnbecaro:iconjohnbecaro: reports, Jan 9, 2007
This are the Deviant Filipino Comic Artists that made impact on the Local and International Scene. This are our Heroes, a living proof of
inspirations! Believe it or not, they have their own uncontrollable fans all around the Globe! This are the people who shape and influence the future of Filipino Comic Artists and Creators, next to the wave of Alex Niño,Redondo, Alcala and our Modern Filipino Legendary Comic Artist: Whilce Portacio and Nick Manabat. We have check their determination , struggle, hardwork and perseverance on their fields whether it may be in inking, pencilling, coloring, creating and anything about comics. They are the people we are looking into and trying to follow their steps!

Here in Deviant Art, They deserve to be honored! Page views are part of the criteria upon my selection on the Top 20.But I am more checking on how they influence fellow artists and their achievements in local and international audience.

Here They are in order:

1. Gerry Alanguilan ~tagasanpablo
Gerry was one among who hang out closely with Whilce Portacio. He is one of the toughest inker Whilce ever had.He worked as inker in almost 10 years in various foreign and mainstream comic companies such as Marvel, DC and Image, on books like New X-men, Fantastic Four, X-Force,Wolverine, Batman: Danger Girl, Silent Dragon, and Superman: Birthright. Now, he is currently managing his own Publishing here in the Philippines (Komikero Publishing) and the latest Product is his ELMER. The decision he made creates new inspiration for Filipino Creators after the down fall of "Filipino Komiks" years ago.His Online Museum of Filipino Komiks created a glimpse on present generation of Comics Artist (which is more influenced by Western and Japanese Styles), making them more acquinted on the "First wave of Filipino Artists Invasion" and "the Glory of Filipino Komiks". He is the founder of Komikero Artists Group.
2. Gilbert Monsanto ~gammaknight
Gilbert Was one of the most hardworking comics creator in the Philippines up to this date (with more than 10 years also). He created various characters that also shaped as one of our childhood Superheroes such as Cybernaut, Robie, BioTrog and so may others. He also founded "Exodus" together with some colleagues. When Whilce Portacio came to Manila, Gilbert was among the few to be hand-picked and trained in his studio, and for a time served as chief instructor for Portacio's comic art school. He also work on international titles such as Hazard, Loner,Tales of Darkness #1 and STONE. Gilbert got his break when he penciled Avalon Comics' Hellcop in October 1998.When there is a total downfall of Philippine Comics, Gilbert never stopped and considered to be one of the "guerillas of the Komiks industry".The evidences shows that he worked as an art director for the 2003 revival of the 'Darna' (Mango Comics). Now, Gilbert has ventured also into his own publishing :SACRED MOUNTAIN PUBLICATIONS...giving birt to "Alagad Inc.", TROPA and the "rebirth of his lifetime Characters" in Rambol.
3. Lienil Francis Yu ~leinilyu
It was on Nov 28, 2006, when Carlo Pagulayan announced Lienil's aCcount on DA.He uploaded a total of 29 deviations.I was fascinated because he already got 21,499(as of this moment of writing) page previews and got 1110 watchers in his DA in just more than a month! You can see the shouts and comments of his fans all over the world! He was first spotted when he won Wizard's Drawing Board Contest. He was first hired by Whilce Portacio to do some gig for Wildstorm Productions. How ever it did not work well and Whilce tried to submit his samples to Marvel. And He landed working on his popular Wolverine Series. He then worked on various titles such as X-men, Fantastic Four, Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk, New Avengers, High Roads, Superman Birthright and Silent Dragon.Aside from drawing comics, Lienel was also doing Conceptual Arts for Films in the Hollywood.

I really adore the Filipino comic artists & their work, although my problem is that they don't seem to have a distinct style that could represent Philippine comics well, seeing that IMO they based their styles on foreign comic artists. There's not really much anything new that could attract other people to appreciate Philiipine works. I admit, I'm pretty cliche'd myself :(

Good Comment.:)

However, Have you seen the works of Alex Niņo, Alfredo Alcala and Redondo?Or have you heard that there once called "Invasion of Filipino Artists." ?

Taken this from the article of
Gerry Alanguilan

It would come as a complete surprise to many, and no doubt skepticism from others, but yes, we do have such a thing as a unique Filipino style of comics art. In fact, I can even consider it a very strong “group style”, which was once upon a time as unique and as singular as manga.

This style was pioneered by the likes of Francisco V. Coching, and further developed by Nestor Redondo and Alfredo Alcala. Only Alex Niņo was able to break from the traditional “group style” and was able to create something uniquely his own.
:chew:
David A. Roach, writing for the Comic Book Artist Magazine, (Issue #4, Vol. 2, 2004) describes this style as follows:

"What the Filipinos shared was a good, solid and usually (Niņo excepted) conventional approach to storytelling, exceptional draftmanship, and exuberant florid brushwork which harked back to the golden years of magazine illustration in the first few decades of the 20th Century.":chew:

In the early 70's, if one is so immersed in Philippine comics, the “Filipino style” is as unmistakable as manga is today. If one picked up a DC comic book in the 70's, one can immediately tell if the artist was Filipino or not. Our style was that recognizable.

I hope it makes you a little bit happy. Though today, our style has completely evolved due to lot of factors including our very own history.:)
