Passwords?

~Skyrail:iconSkyrail: reports, January 20, 2007
In this day and age simple passwords can be worked out easily. Even a long word from a dictionary or a random set of numbers. Dictionary attacks and password crackers that use random sets of numbers could work these out easily. Brute force attacks will also try and use a combination of letters and numbers, so how do you try and make a password that's harder to crack?

As realitysquared stated if you use a password related to something you talk about a lot or are known to like it'll be obvious what your password could be. Even things like your background image, if you have a background image of a certain animal and you talk about them a lot people may guess you use it as your password. Because of this here's an article based around password production.

The absolute minimum number of figures used should be 8, even then this is not really that secure and you should aim for 12+ figures consisting of a combination of numbers, upper case and lower case letters and special characters. For many people remembering a password of this type would be very hard to remember, which effectively makes it hard to crack but useless to try and login.

As I read in a magazine recently (Micro Mart issue 935) mnemonics are very good to use as passwords. They seem pretty random and can be easily remembered via a phrase. Integrating then a few numbers to replace letters and some special characters resembling something your password can become very secure.

A mnemonic my dad always used to teach me to remember the order of planets was: My Very Elderly Mother Just Sleeps Until Night Passes giving MVEMJSUNP (Forget the fact that Pluto is now no longer a planet.). This on it's own looks pretty confusing and hard to remember but remembering the mnemonic helps you create a secure password.

Now to add some numbers MV3MJ5UNP1991. That's the mnemonic with my birth year. It's getting more secure but now let's change the case of certain letters. MveMjsunp1991, here I've kept the M's in upper case and moved all the others to lower case. Last but not least some special characters: MveMjsunp1991^_^. So now it has some special characters being a face made out of ^ and _. You can do anything any face: *_* -_- 0_o @_@ o_- any combination of characters will do. So there we go the password MveMjsunp1991^_^. Very hard to crack and uses a combination of upper/lower case letters, numbers and characters, it also consists of 16 characters. After a few times of typing it in you'll get used to it and remember it, whereas it might be difficult to crack.

Next week: how to create a more complicated and secure password for those of you who want stronger security.

DISCLAIMER: The passwords use are not mine and can not be used to access my account and so do not bother trying go do something better.

lol, and I was just about to say "Haha, now I know your password!!" :D :D

Nice guide :) Quick and leads to the creation of a very secure password indeed. And this is very good for dA, which supports both large passwords, and all kinds of characters.

But for other sites, that might be difficult to do, as they require "more than 4 less than 8 digits" or "at least one number" or "no symbols" and stuff like that. So, the best thing to do is to exploit the range of passwords the site requires (whether that's just number and letters or any characters etc etc).

I personally created a really hard-to-break password after one of my friends saw my previous password and then deleted my e-mail account (yeah, nice friend, huh?). It's very complicated, I didn't create it with any ideas in mind, just it being very difficult to see (which includes lots of "shifts") and difficult to crack. And then I got used to it by time, and I type it as fast as I do my name :D (just a little tip for those worrying about how much time it will take them to type the password ;P). I also used to practice in notepad until I got it right :D

Again, nice guide, I think many people will find this useful :) Take care! :D

Thank you so much for the feedback, much appreciated. Yes I see your point about limited passwords which I think is stupid, because of this I use a variety of passwords and get into a pickle when I forget which password I use where especially when it's usually just a case of letters difference :) thanks for the feed back once again.

I have heard of one company that specify that employees' passwords must be exactly 8 characters long and contain exactly 2 digits. Thanks for telling the crackers that! Now they can make their cracking algorithms more efficient!

Even our own university imposes a maximum password length which is not that large (I shall be sensible and not tell you what that value is). This effectively discriminates against people who want to make secure passwords, to make sure their passwords are as easy to crack as those of people that make easy-to-guess ones. :|

My schools passwords are absolutely a joke, really they are, I won't tell you why. However if you knew, omg it's like so easy to work it out :lmao:

Might they be set by default to be equal to one of: your date of birth, your first name or last name, or perhaps your actual username? :lmao:
~Skyrail:iconSkyrail: Jan 20, 2007, 5:14:02 AM
 no none of the above :D it's random I think, just stupid, entirely stupid. I would say lol, I guess you'd have to find my school though ;P problem is I have a lot of coursework there =P

Hmm, not sure if it's still true, but by default at my old secondary school (2 years ago) the default password was blank. :|
*jujimufu:iconjujimufu: Jan 20, 2007, 5:17:41 AM
Yes, I get that too :) That's why I have three passwords, one for each of the two most used cases: 1) no restrictions on numbers or letters but not all characters available, and must be more than 4 and less than X digits, and b) anything accepted :D :D

And no problem for the feedback, passwords is a subject that's been troubling me for some time :)

I also find it a good idea to havea different PW for different accounts. LIke in DA I have 3 account. each account has a different PW . every account I have online and IRL has diffeent PW's . none arr the same.
This way if on the off chance that someone does crack it. They have only got one PW, and cant access all accounts.
Also another good idea is Changing the PW every month or or couple of months. All things I do anyway :D Which reminds me I need to do that again soon hahah..
