A 2D Studio class of twenty students from the
Art Institute of California - Orange County came together to work on
Scalawags! (the story concept pitched by Kelli Davis [link], Callista Barrett [link], and Cassie Fuertez [link])
We spent 11 weeks working together on this project (four weeks of pre-production and five weeks animating and compositing).
It is hosted on DeviantArt with no sound, in order to abide by the copyright policy, but there are links provided to other hosts (such as newgrounds and youtube) where the animation can be viewed with the soundtrack.
There will be a journal on the
Scalawags! deviantart gallery
[link] detailing the goals of the class and the people who were involved. So stop by our gallery to watch the animation and see all the artwork that went into the final result.
Enjoy

And I quote: "I think the easiest way to define this is to keep the term informational in mind.
Is what you are posting informational and of value to the community at large?
Is it something that will interest a good cross section of the community?
Or is it something better suited to a journal since it is about you personally?
. . .And that really is what it all boils down to. Does it pertain to a larger audience. . ."
This is not about any one person on an individual basis-- this is announcing the viewable efforts of a team of animation students who achieved something that set the bar at their school; something that should appeal to the animation and flash community here on DeviantART. That's why this is news.
I have read the FAQ...and that was how I knew to place this article in the FLASH SPECIFIC CATEGORY OF THE NEWS.
This is the second time I have been met with opposition on a news feed...and I'm extremely frustrated now.
Do you not see the purpose in me writing this? Did it not inform you in ANY WAY!!!???
I'm sorry...but this was just rude. I wouldn't mind ONE BIT if you employed the news feed as way to promote YOUR FILM...in fact I would think it a smart move.

Let me reply to you with some of $lolly's words as well:
"A general rule of thumb for whether or not something should go in your journal instead of news would be “Is it about you?”, as in, is it about you uploading some new work, you got into college, you found 5 bucks in the road etc. If it pertains to you personally or a club you have or anything like that it is not really news, no matter how cool finding that 5 bucks was."
Listen, I didn't mean to insult anyone here. I believe that there is some self-promotion hidden somewhere in that article, was it intentional or not; perhaps I have a problem with people posting articles featuring themselves, who knows. If you look at it as "news must be informative", then I have to agree that it IS a news article, properly written, clear and informative as it should be. You could also look at it as I did on first read, which was "Look, we made this, check it out." Perhaps was it a misinterpretation. The whole team thing actually makes it harder to categorize---it's halfway between the journal post and the news post.
That said, if I had known I would offend people by doing that, I wouldn't have done it.

Actually, I was told that self-promotion was not news, but as I seem to be bashed from everywhere that it is not self-promotion because it was teamwork, then fine, I was wrong, if it's what you want to hear---and I never meant to start a war about this, I really didn't.
But as it includes you, and your friends, I'm sorry but---to my eyes, it IS self-promotion, in a way at least. Yes, so it will interest many people, and I am an animator myself, and I did check out your film because of that news post. I judged, however, that perhaps this was more journal-content because of the personal aspect of it. I was just acting as I thought was suitable, in a very polite way, to redirect you, without being rude, or without contacting anyone to make sure your news post was deleted, or whatever.
As for the "Do you not see the purpose in me writing this? Did it not inform you in ANY WAY!!!???" part, it did 'inform' me in a way where I thought "Hey, they made a film and they're advertising it in the news." Perhaps I'm wrong, and to put it frankly, I hope I am, since you seem to take it so personally; I think that the subject matter in your news post must be right smack in-between the news content and the journal content, becoming a little touchy, depending on people's different views of what informs people and what doesn't.
Like you said, "Am I harming you in some way with what I feel to be news?" Well, am I harming YOU with what I feel to be news as well? If news have anything to do with how people "feel", then you should accept the fact that I'm not totally sure this belongs in the news category, and that I just felt like telling you in case it indeed was a mistake (because so many people post news posts that are totally irrelevant---I don't mean you, I mean those who REALLY spam). People's opinions are different, people's interpretations are different, and you shouldn't feel insulted/frustrated/etc. because of that, because otherwise you'll get hurt often.
Oh and, no, I won't promote my film using the news, because then it's be obvious I'll get bashed for it.

Anyway...How would you have known about the film if I had only posted it in my journal? You don't watch my profile...or the Scalawags profile...see my point?
