"Remember Remember the Fifth of November, The gunpowder treason and plot, I know of no reason for the gun powder treason to ever be forgot." V for Vendetta
My name is Leo. I was born in the Great African Savannah on the rock formation known as Stone Ridge. I have three siblings, one brother and two sisters Blaze, Tia and Jamie. I have lived in darkness for as long as I can remember and now I see many strange things. My mother, Kyra says the things I see are trees, birds, rocks, and the savannah. My Father Zeek is the leader of the small group of lions that share Stone Ridge called the pride. My father rarely played with me he was always asleep by the tree that grew in a crack in the stone. So I went to play with my brother and sister. On my way to the cave I found mother grooming Jamie and asked her where Blaze was She said “He told me he was going to go to the watering hole with Tia.” I decided to go to the watering hole after Jamie was done being groomed because it isn’t a good idea to go alone hyenas love to eat up little cub that wander to far from mother. When we got to the watering hole I saw no animals anywhere! “Where do you think they all went?” Jamie asked. Then out from behind a rock came Blaze running so fast that I barely heard him attempt to yell” Run to mother and Father while you can!” I heard Jamie scream I turned and saw a huge crocodile sitting on the bank with a bloody furry thing in its mouth. “Tia!” I said but there was no response, she was dead and so would I if I didn’t get out of here! I ran never looking back not even sure if I was heading home but I wasn’t about to stop and find out. Finally I opened my eyes I was far from the watering hole but I wasn’t very close to home. I could see father’s tree from here but it was tiny. I heard foot steps behind was it the crocodile, or another creature here to kill me! Turned and saw to my fortune that it was Jamie but she was limping her back leg was red from blood. The crocodile tried to eat her too. I knew that we were in danger being so far from home and having the smell of blood to attract hyenas and other lions. So I cried a cry so loud that my father and mother were sure to here it and come to save me and Jamie but I also put myself in more danger by doing so another creature might here it and come.
I heard a roar from my left and so did my sister. I was hopeful that it was mother
But it wasn’t mother it was the one thing I didn’t want to come. It was an unfamiliar lion. It was the male lion from the pride through the Zebra’s Gorge.
“What are you little brats doing so far from home and all alone too? “He said. “Who are you?” I snapped angrily. “Oh feisty aren’t you, I’m Fort, ruler of the Gorge pride! “ He said proudly. “So, father will be here in a few minutes to beat you up!” Jamie said quickly. “You don’t know do you?” He said. “Know what?” I said. “Oh that my pride is here to challenge you father for rule of the pride of Stone Ridge and for Stone Ridge itself!” He said looking confident. “You’re Liar!” Jamie said worried about her father. “Want to bet!” he replied laughing evilly after words. I whispered in Jamie’s her and told her to run when
I said three. “Three!” I said and took of towards Stone ridge hoping and praying that father, mother, and Blaze were all right. “Get Back her you little brats!” Fort yelled. I turned around to see if Jamie was behind me and I saw that Jamie was behind me but Fort was behind her. I saw some tall grass and ran into it hidden by the tall blades. I saw Jamie coming but she passed the grass and ran for home and Fort was gaining and gaining and gaining until I heard a hiss, a roar and plop. The smoke cleared away I could barely make out Fort over Jamie who wasn’t moving. I was sadden by the loss my sister after just losing my other sister but I had to get home before Fort figured out I was alive. So without looking back I ran through the grass toward the Stone Ridge. Things were worse than I imagined the whole ridge was covered with dead bodies. Lions young and old, I looked through the graveyard aimlessly trying to find mother, father, or even Blaze. I then found what I was looking for I saw mother fighting a male lion and Blaze cowering behind her in fear. I called out “Mother!” She looked up and said “Run Leo run!” “Mother, I won’t leave you and Blaze! I said shedding tears from my eyes. “Go or be slain!” Mother said pushing Blaze towards me. Then I knew we had to escape or we’d be killed. I ran with Blaze at my heels, I could hear the fading growls and snarls of my mother desperately fighting with the male. Even though I wanted to turn back, to help mother, I pressed onward not stopping until I was one hundred percent sure that we weren’t being followed. When I looked at where my sadness had led us I found Blaze and I were far from home we were all the way to Dreamtime Woods. I heard stories about Dreamtime Woods from my father, Father speaking of him where was he? I don’t think I ever saw him at the ridge. “Leo, are you all right?” Blaze asked. “Huh? Oh, I’m fine, Hey did you see Dad before we, you know?” I responded. “ Well I think he was fighting Fort himself at Father’s Tree.” “Let’s get going we need to keep moving.” I said eager to change the subject. “ Who made you Alpha Male?” Blaze said. What? I was just trying to save our skins and he guess steamed! “What?” I said shocked! “I want to lead and I think we should go towards Crystal Caverns.” Blaze hissed. “You know that Zebra Gorge is between them right?” I asked. “Yeah, but if you take the long way you can go through Gyro Desert.” Gyro Desert? I didn’t think about that, but it so far away. “Come on we have nothing to lose …” Blaze said. “ Except our lives.” I added. “ … but we have the world to gain.” Blaze added ready to leave. “Well I’ll give it a chance, maybe we’ll find Father, So Let’s GO! I said. We ran till sunset, we knew we couldn’t travel once night fell for it was full of danger. I searched for a place to sleep before we got into trouble. Then I saw it, an Aecia tree with two large rocks that form a small cave. “Over there!” I said. “Run!” Blaze said terrified. I turned around to meet a small group of hyenas. They were menacing ready to attack. We ran with all our strength desperately trying to get the rock. “You can’t escape!” The hyenas cackled. I looked behind me and was met with a hyenas face right at my tail. If I didn’t make it to the rock now I never would. Then right as the hyena opened it jaw, ready for the attack, I ran under the rock! I was safe, I couldn’t believe it. I outran a hyena! I looked around hoping to see my brother beside me. I looked he was there, but he was badly injured. “Blaze what happened?” I asked. “What do you think?” Blaze snapped. “One of those mutes bit my leg.” He said. I gazed down at Blaze’s leg and was shocked! I had fang marks and was bleeding. “Is your friend okay?” I heard from behind me. I turned to see another lion cub. It was, surprisingly, white! It was a pure white lion with sea blue eyes. “Hello, my name’s Kamyl.” It said in a voice as soothing as a waterfall. Then I realized that she was, in fact, a girl! “Wow you’re white!” I said shocked to see such beautiful fur. “Oh, yeah it’s kind of embarrassing.” She said. “I think it’s beautiful.” I replied. “Really?!” She said excited by the complement. “Ow!” Blaze said. Blaze I completely forgot about him. I turned to my brother and finally got a good look at his wound. His leg was horrible. It was injured so badly that the dirt he stood upon was stained with blood. “He needs shade weed.” Kamyl said looking at the wound. “Shade weed?” I asked curious about the plant. “It’s a medicinal herb.” She answered. “Where can I find it?” I asked knowing what I would have to do. “It only grows in a small, remote oasis in Gyro Desert. “ Then I’m going.” I said knowing I had to help my brother at all costs. “You can’t…” Blaze pleaded. “I have to help you.” I cried. “You don’t even know what it looks like.” Kamyl added. “Then you come with me.” I suggested. “She can’t, you can’t …” Blaze whimpered. “He’s right, um your name was?” Kamyl said. “Leo and I have to.” I answered. “Well, then you have to let me teach you about the herb.” Kamyl said knowing this was a lost argument. “Okay, but I need to leave as soon as possible.” I added not wanting to waste any time. “Then it’s time to begin.” Kamyl said. “You’ve got to memorize this!” Kamyl hissed. “Why?” I whined. ”Because if the weed dries out then it’s useless. “ Kamyl said obviously frustrated. “Okay so I must keep the plant in water for fifteen minutes a day or it dries out.” I asked. “No!” She roared, she kind of scared me. “You’ve got to keep it in a gourd from a tree.” She said. “I’ve got to go or I’ll never find shelter before sunset.” I said. Blaze started laughing and said. “In Gyro Desert there is no shelter.” “Kamyl, I have to go.” I said. “Just be careful, it’s very dangerous out there and I don’t want you to get hurt.” She said starting to tear up. “You act as if you’ve known me always.” I said running with the wind into the savannah. “You make me feel as if it was meant to be…” Kamyl muttered unleashing with it her hopes of my survival. As our paths spilt ways I realized that no matter what dangers came my way I would return to Kamyl with the Shade weed. “Watch over him.” I whispered into the sky. My travels carried me into the night. I knew in Gyro Desert very few animals would be insane enough travel at night. Once I arrived at the Desert I realized there was no turning back and that there was no second option. I ran all through the evening and when the moon was at the highest point of its nightly run, I rested. My legs ached from running for so long, and felt as if they were the ones needing the herb. I fell into a deep sleep not really caring who or where I was. When I awoke it was noon. “Oh no! I lost so much time sleeping.” I thought. I immediately started running. I looked everywhere but all I saw was an endless sea of sand dunes. When over the endless horizon I was sliver of hope. A tree skinny and dried from the beating sun but a tree none the less. I ran to tree hoping, praying that this was indeed the oasis I searched for. When I came to tree I greeted with misfortune, this was not the oasis it was just a dried up old tree in the desert. “Whose there?” I heard someone shout from above. I looked up and saw an old bat. “Excuse me, do you know where the oasis is?’ I asked hopefully. “Why would you want to go to that old place?” The Bat said. “So you do know!” I said. Finally I’d get the herb. “Yeah, I know where it is but I can’t help you now.” The bat said starting to sleep again. NO! I was so close I couldn’t let a grumpy old bat stop me. I took my paws a shook the tree. ”WHAAAA!” The bat yelled falling to my feet. “Alright, Alright, I’ll show the way to the oasis.” The bat said.” Thank you so much you don’t know how important this is.” I said. “Yeah, yeah let’s get going, the sooner I show you the sooner I can go to sleep.” The bat said flying on ahead. I followed willing feeling as light as air knowing that soon my brother would be saved. We went on for hours and the joy soon turned into doubt. “Don’t be discourage cub, we’re almost there.” The bat said noticing my fading smile. Then as if I was dreaming I saw it. There as clear as day, the oasis, it was very simple a small Pool of water, a few trees, and plenty of berry bushes. I ran right to it not waiting on the bat. “Here it is the boring, never changing oasis…” The bat said. “…I’m leaving.” The bat said flying off. I looked through the bushes and all around the pool. Where was the weed?” Then suddenly I saw in the submerged at the center of the pool was a black weed with almost star looking marks. “That has to be it!” I said to myself. Wait I need a gourd! I’m so close and I forget a key item, how stupid of me! Maybe there’s one in the trees. I looked at the first tree and saw one gourd high up at the base of the leaves. How am I supposed to get that! Then I remembered the bat. I shook the tree’s base will all my might and then after about 10 minutes the gourd fell to the ground. I bit it opened and used my claws to dig out the insides. Then I filled it with water and dropped the plant inside. I grabbed the gourd with my mouth and began to run, slower than before, all the way back to Blaze and Kamyl. I wonder how they’re holding up. I’m so glad to be rid of this horrible desert. Looking back I guess I spoke way too soon. I was running along when I was met by the vicious pack of jackals. “Where you going with that gourd, Sparky?” One said. “Yeah, why don’t you stick around?” Another said. “Move, you mutes I have to help my friend.” I hissed angry from the interruption. “You shouldn’t speak that way to people who can hurt you.” One jackal, apparently the leader, said. “Take him!” The leader commanded. I thought It was my end when saw the jackals close in for the kill. I thought of my brother and how he would die without my herb, and about Kamyl I would never see her again. Then almost instantly, a roar came from behind me then a huge, red lion leaped over the jackals and attacked. The lion fought with perfect accuracy take out each and every jackal in site. “Who are you?” I whispered.
I watched as the jackals disappeared over the horizon. “Are you all right young one.” The lion asked. It clearly was a male by his pitch black mane. This lion was very strange though, he was huge, he had two gold streaks in his mane and he had a very peculiar scar under his eye. “Are you all right?” He repeated. “Yeah, I’m fine. “ I replied still stunned by the close call rescue. “We mustn’t dawdle, they will be back in greater number than before.” He said walking off. I quickly followed knowing that this mystery lion was my best bet out of this sand pit. “Rio…” he suddenly said. “What?” I asked. “…my name, it’s Rio.” He added. “I see you have come for the Shade weed you must hurry out of the desert or the herb will die.” He said not even taking the time to glance my direction. “Um, Okay…” I answered. “Come…” He said. With that he took off with amazing speed. It took me all my energy just to stay behind him. “What’s wrong young one?” He asked in a way that seemed he was mocking me. I then used as much of my energy as I could to get right next to him. In the midst of our racing Rio suddenly stop. I was stopped but not near soon enough. I slid and had to run back to where Rio was. “This as far as I go…” He said. That’s when I realized we were at the edge of the desert. Yes! Now Kamyl and Blaze were only a night’s run from here. I’m almost there! “Thank you.” I said. “If your ever in Gyro Desert look for me at the oasis. “ Rio said turning to leave. With those words and thought of my friends in my heart I knew I couldn’t lose.
