Happiness

~Ghoulardo:iconGhoulardo: reports, February 2, 2007
The vision of happiness is unbelievably deluded in this age among the teenage population in the United States. Chief among these delusions is also the most common, the illusion that material possessions will make you happy. The teenage population is constantly moving in the direction of “Oh well I really want this new iPod and that would really be awesome and just make me really happy…”. Although this vision of material possession will make someone happy is not entirely false. Material possessions are perfectly capable of bringing in happiness to teenagers. The happiness they bring is however false and merely temporary, sooner or later the great new object of desire and popularity fades into the distance and whatever happiness it brought goes along with it.

Some teenagers believe by the simple action of which they surround themselves with that will bring them happiness. This course of action can also be successful depending on what type of people the teen decides to surround them with. If they surround themselves with people that enjoy breaking the law and abuse substances they are bound to get in some sort of trouble which will certainly lead to disappoint. However the reverse of that situation where the given teenager surrounds themselves with productive members of society that they can share interests with, given what type of personality the teenager has they could easily draw happiness from being around good people.

This brings up the totally opposite face of this discussion. What precisely is “true” happiness for most teenagers in America? This happiness is something that will last for almost or in the most successful cases the entirety of someone’s life. Anything under the sun that could last for years love, art, sports simply too many things to name. In conclusion the simplest definition that true happiness can be given to the modern teenager is for a happiness that will last for years.

Or; the supposed "good" people these teenagers are pressed upon to hang out by their parents or society because of said people's "good" traits could be so bland, mundane, and uninteresting that it drives the very neglected and unhappy teenager from those people and to the "bad" ones that abuse substances; making the teenager prone to incarceration and other such very, indeed, unhappy things.
Just another scenario from a pessimistic point of view.
Happiness in slavery.

I feel depression in modern society is prevalent as our expectations from life are now raised very high. Socety no longer gets enjoyment out of simple things. Modern culture has become far too sophisticated and complex.

I had hamster that made me happy.

He died, he died.

My mom said he was sleeping.

She lied! She lied!

*ahem*

Back on topic now.

In my opinion, true happiness can only be found by those who are capable of living without the object(s) that give them this happiness. If they view something as making them happy, are they capable of being happy without it?

"You never know how much you love someone until they're gone." - I don't know who said it. We'll call him/her/them "Anonymous".

Myself, I find happiness with my friends. Playing games, talking about mad premises, finding flaws in the perceived laws of fantasy that require us to suspend reality in order for these flaws to be of importance or, indeed, possible (i.e. talking about how aerodynamic halflings are, or how much power Evas need and where they get it from, etc.).

I use my PC and my mp3 player and my books to enjoy myself.

But a PC can't talk to you when you're feeling unhappy. A book can't hug you and assure you that everything will be alright. And neither Jim Morrison nor Freddie Mercury can help you get the strength to carry on (Well, unless you listen to certain songs or something).

That's what friends and family are for. To keep you flying straight and true, and stop you screwing up so very badly (or to help you screw up even worse! :D).
