The International Museum of Women's
Imagining Ourselves website is,
in the words of founder and director Paula Goldman, "a platform for young women to create positive change in their lives, their communities, and the world." The site features the art and writing of women around the world.
Currently, =
myskran's poem, "
Delicate Veil," is on display. True, Travis A. Everett is a guy, but February's exhibit is
Young Men. The gallery asks viewers and readers to "Hear what young men have to say about the image of young men today. See how film, art and culture shape the masculine identity and whether the young men of today accept or reject this more traditional notion of masculinity."
The speaker of the poem is moved to think about what is means to "be a man" during a quintessentially masculine act. Travis writes that his poem is "about the conflict between history and the present, between our physical manhood and the idea of manhood we carry in our heads.... I don't want to be that stereotypical primal man, but he rears up his head from time to time. I still have to figure out how to come to terms with him, and this poem chronicles an instant in that struggle."
Give Travis's poem a read and check out the site. Maybe there's something you'd like to contribute as well!
