This Wednesday February 14th, Ryan Larkin died from a metastasized lung cancer at age 63. He was a well-known animator and auteur from Montreal, and an Oscar nominee for his film Walking, in 1969.
Having worked at the National Film Board during the 60s and 70s, he produced many successful films, like Walking and Street Musique. He learned most of his animating techniques from Norman McLaren.
However, lately, he was more known as having drug and alcohol problems, as well as being homeless, hanging around Schwartz Deli on St-Laurent. The story of such a successful director ending on the streets surprised many and was the inspiration for several documentary films, including the award-winning short film Ryan, by Chris Landreth (Oscar for Best Animated Short). The success of the latter got Ryan back into business, as he got working again on some films, after years of non-productivity.
In December 2006, he worked on some shorts for MTV. He said that he had given up on his bad habits, and that he would make a comeback into auteur animation. He was rumoured to be allowed back in at the NFB.
That really is unfortunate news. I met the director last year of the short film (Ryan) that won the Oscar. Quite passionate about his subject and the future of his animation.
je sais que c'est bizard de penser a ça...mais c'est quand même mieux mourrir a la st valentin que n'importe quand dans l'année...non?

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

S'il y avait plus de senti-mentaux et de rêveurs romantiques sur la Terre, y aurait-it plus de naïfs et d'illusionnés?
