:pointr:LGU

It's a bit hard to believe that it was just a year ago that the LGU was started up. We've always had our ways of communicating what's going on the community with each other, be it the forums or just on deviant pages, journals and through the celebrated serial of *suture. However, it seemed like, with the community growing as fast as it is, it was time to take advantage of the news feature to just post bulletin type messages to inform the lit community about what's going on...in the lit community.

Enjoy our tenth edition and our One Year Anniversary. A lot has changed, but literature keeps on keeping on.

:pointr:Ch-ch-changes

The New Year came along with a rather big change that will be felt around lit for quite some time. That, of course, was the announcement that Senior Lit GD `imperfect would be stepping down from her position. After serving as a GD for almost two years, she has given the community a lot of great things that we will enjoy for many years to come. One of which, of course, was the LGU itself. That along with countless other projects (gallery restructures, countless DDs, contest, new features, assisting oldies and newbies in the community, new previews, the on-going lit prints project, on and on and on).

After almost two years of service, through some very difficult times for our community, whether you get along or not, we all owe her a bit of thanks for all she's done. This isn't necessarily a goodbye, but we've given her some time to take a break, and take control of her future here. We wish her all the best in whatever she chooses, especially if that involves another great round of work here.

:pointr:Top-Ten

Nothing seems to be as enticing a way to show off a list of your favourite things than a good ol' fashion countdown. That, and the number ten just seems to be so round and even, that it just comes out in all forms when mentioning any kind of a list. So, would you believe that the literature community came together in the new year to combine these aspects into a display of various favourite poems and prose pieces of the year 2006?

=PinkyMcCoversong posted 2006 in Lit, a collection of top-ten lists throughout the community and showing what was popular universally throughout. Definitely worth a look if you were trapped on a distant planet, or worse...without internet through all of 2006.

:pointr:Critmas

The wild world of critique was served a special holiday dish last year in the Merry Litmas Critique Competition. This brought the lit community out to offer Secret Santa critiques to share with various authors, then deciding (like we all do on Christmas) who we love more because of the gifts they've given.

*GeneratingHype took top honours this year with this fantastic critique. Make sure to check out the article for all the winners.

:pointr:007 Write-off

The project created by *salshep, ~007-WriteOff seems to have got off to a successful start. If you're looking for a writing challenge and some help to see it through, make sure to take a look. Here's the club description from their first journal:

'~007-WriteOff is a project to encourage people to write every day, or as often as they can, based on the NaPoWriMo and NaNoWriMo concepts, except that instead of running for one month, it goes all year.

You can pick a particular month in which to write every day (several of us are doing January to kick-start the year) or just add something every few days throughout the year. It's all up to you. If you do choose a particular month, be sure to drop a line about it on the main page here, so we all know to come cheer you on! :D

Keep in mind, this is not just a place for polished, shiny deviations. It's for rough drafts, moments of inspiration and reams of waffle, which hopefully you can draw upon later when writing for your main gallery.'

:pointr:PoetryPlease Chat w/ salshep

=PoetryPlease, purveyor of poetry discussion, chats and workshops, is presenting another feature in their long running Q&A Session serial. This time we have the aforemention *salshep up to bat, ready to answer any and all questions you may have.

The chat will be in #PoetryQnA on February 25th, 10PM GMT (5PM EST). Make sure to check it out. You can also read much more about the session and *salshep in their news article.

:pointr:Love Letter Contest

With the spirit of February the 14th looming, it was envitable that someone would break out the love. Literature was no exception.

The Love Letter Competition allowed writers to express their inner most thoughts and feelings on the subject that very often causes cries of cliché. Writers were challenged to pen "a love letter that represents a stage in someone's romantic relationship." And so they did, which returned quite a few wonderful entries.

*Negated brought home the gold with their entry a boy I try to forget.

:pointr:Poetry Library

If you're looking for poetry-related reading, whether it be essays, reviews, guides or opinion pieces, be sure to check out ~PoetryLibrary. If you have any essays of your own to do with any aspect of poetry, please do send them to poeticwar@deviantart.com to have them uploaded with a link to your name (or anonymously if you so choose).

:pointr:Crtique Competition

The current winner is *ShadowedAcolyte. Take a look at ^PoeticWar's journal for details of his critique. He wins a 3 month subscription. If you've seen a critique that you think deserves recognition for its skill and helpfulness, please send ^PoeticWar a note with 'Critique Competition' in the subject line, and a link to the specific critique in question. If you really can't find anyone else deserving, you can even suggest yourself.

:pointr:LGU Notice

Remember, if there is anything that you feel is important within the community that has been sorely missed within the LGU, make sure to drop me (^coshdaddy) or any of the wonderful lit staff a note and we'll make sure that vital events around lit are included.

Memorial Day by ~AustralianHippos. What could have been a brazen distortion of haiku and tanka poetry is instead turned into something quiet that hovers above the abyss of life's ignorance about its origins and endings, especially lovely Cartesian ones.
