Photomanipulation Explored - Edition #3

~azayii:iconazayii: reports, February 20, 2007
Every edition, I, =azayii, will be interviewing a talented artist who specialises in photomanipulation.

For this edition, =karemelancholia kindly agreed to do an interview with me.

What first got you started in photo manipulations?
Well in fact it's a person. A real artist =IIMadhoshiII who introduced me dA. She wanted me to come here and give it a try! And I did.
Imagination is my world, so I thought that maybe I can put in image, into the cyber reality some glimpses of my soul...

What is your biggest inspirations when it comes to photo manipulations?
Imagination, Dreams mostly. Often I go to sleep and I wake up and realize that I have an idea. I write it down, and go back to sleep, swearing that I'll create it sooner or later. Sometimes I "need" to create, I can't sleep if i had not created something. I need to exteriorized my emotions (I'm bipolar I/II) so iI can't stop, i'm stick on my computer and can't leave the mouse.... It's a urge need.
Other times also, and that's the reason why I participate to contests, I just see a marvellous stock that I surely need to use. So i put this stock in my PSP, add some little things, play around with it, and then imagination leads me to another world while my creation is ended.
So, yes, several things inspire me. Yesterday I was at my kinesitherapist and I saw something through the windows, and a scene imposed itself in front of me, a world, a place, something surreal I just saw it, because when I imagine something it instantely draw it in front of me.
Like a vision, as if you've travelled elsewhere...

What is the best piece, in your eyes, you’ve ever made, and why?
Oh probably Summoning The Dark Source:
.
The colors, the details. I like it because I've let my imagination go. Originally it was made for a contest, it was meant to be something bright... And well, you see what i came up with? ;-). I thought that a butterly could be a perfect invocator for the Evil!
I've used a new process discovered by chance and what came out from it was better than what I imagined!
I think that technically it's my most achieved piece.

What processes do you take when preparing and making a photo manipulation?
I usually don't think on how I'll do this or that. I let my hand go... I prefer spontaneous creations. I can't envisage what I'll do, it's impossible. It will cut me from creativity!
But spontaneously, what can be logical, I work on perspectate.
If I make a portrait i tend to concentrate myself on the eyes (above all the pupil) and cheecks. I'm completely left-handed for the lips...
Then, when the creation is a bit advanced I care about the tones, the shadows and lights.
I also wonder if adding another medias (just a little touch) will make it prettier (usually vectors)...

Do you have any tips for other manipulators?
First of all : I-MA-GI-NA-TION! That's the keyword, let it fly, don't be shy!
Also, i know it's hard for most of us, but don't be afraid of using your paint brush... use it, it'll give an artistical touch.
I was afraid of it for a long time. Now i'm only begining to use it and wow, it stimulates me. I still have a looooong way to go.
Also don't fear in making errors, we all begin by something, in my creations here at dA there are tons of errors, but as I'm practising I know that I'm improving (but not as fast as I would like... ahah), and it's always a pleasure to go back to our old creations and to immediately say "Argh there's an error here, and here..." etc. That means that you have the eyes now for seeing it and that you're improving. Remake them! Don't be shy.
Trust yourself, take your time, and imagine...

Closing with some =karemelancholia thumbs
